*Chandigarh, December 8:-* The beautiful City of Flowers, Chandigarh, is hosting the three-day Chrysanthemum Show at the Terraced Garden in Sector 33. The show begun today and will continue until December 10, from 11 am to 7 pm each day.

The zero waste flower show inaugurated by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, in the presence of City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta, Adviser to Administrator, Sh. Nitin Yadav IAS, Sh. Parveer Ranjan, IPS, DGP, Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Senior Deputy Mayor Sh. Kanwarjeet Rana, area councillor Smt. Anju Katyal, other councillors, senior officers of the civic body and prominent residents of city beautiful.

Sh. Banwarilal Purohit appreciated the beauty of the flowers at The Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023. Taking a moment to capture the essence of the event, he, along with Mayor Chandigarh, Sh. Anup Gupta, and Adviser to Administrator, Sh. Nitin Yadav IAS, posed in front of the stunning “Rakhna Sambhal Chandigarh” floral topiary at The Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023.

This annual event, now in its second consecutive year, has been transformed into a zero waste initiative by the civic body. Alongside showcasing various stalls with different initiatives and projects of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the event promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness.

During his visit, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit toured all the stalls, including the Swachh Bharat Mission stall, which raises awareness about waste segregation at the source. Other stalls showcased horticulture waste composting, home composting, safai mitra, construction and demolition waste management, and a unique and eco-friendly initiative called PRARAMBH, a one-stop store for sustainable products run by a self-help group supported by the civic body.

After the park tour, the Chief Guest paid respects at the Martyr’s Pillar in the Terraced Garden by laying flowers.

As part of the event, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit unveiled an artistically designed brochure on the show. the gardeners (Malis) – the heroes behind the enchanting beauty of our city parks – were also honored by the Chief Guest at the Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023 for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts.

The chief guest praised the officials of the Municipal Corporation for organizing such a splendid show. He encouraged citizens to maintain the beauty of the city’s gardens and urged them to have a small garden either on their terrace or balcony.

Sustainability, creativity, and innovation come together at the special attraction of the “Zero Waste” 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023, featuring the Waste-to-Wonder park at the Terraced Garden.

Waste materials like tires, chains, iron sheets, and plastic have been ingeniously transformed into remarkable structures. From tunnels to see-saws, spring riders to crawling obstacles, and benches made of construction and demolition waste, this park is a true wonderland.

Children can also enjoy a game of snakes and ladders “ Swachhata Ki Saanp Sidhi” made from recycled materials.

Additionally, the Viksit Bharat Yatra camp is also a part of the show, offering citizens the opportunity to inquire about prominent government schemes and enroll in them. A van has been deployed at the Terraced Garden for the next three days to raise awareness among citizens about the various government schemes. The van also showcases a message from the Prime Minister of India, Sh. Narendra Modi, addressing the citizens.

For visitors, MC Chandigarh has made arrangements for public amenities, including a special lost and found counter, a medical counter, water facilities, and clean and hygienic Public Conveniences.

Keeping in view to provide food items on reasonable rates inside the festival ground, the MCC has arranged beautiful ‘Zero Waste Rasoi’, where plastic items have totally banned and promoted biodegradable and recyclable products.

While addressing the gathering, city Mayor lauded the efforts of gardeners and officials, who made this event vibrant and colorful with the beautiful display of chrysanthemum flowers. He also appreciated the decision to organize this three day show a zero waste event.

* MCC launches ‘Bottles for Change’ workshop-cum-exhibition to promote sustainability and waste management*

*Chandigarh December 5:-* Aiming to educate young individuals on the importance of managing used plastic efficiently, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized an informative workshop and exhibition “Bottles for Change” in collaboration with Bisleri International.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Sh. Ram Chandra Yadav, area councillor, Mr. K. Ganesh, Senior General Manager of Bisleri, Mrs. Varinder Kaur, Principal, teachers and school children.

While speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said that the MCC has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainability and waste management with the launch of the “Bottles for Change” program. She said that the programme, which includes an informative workshop and exhibition, aims to educate individuals on the importance of managing used plastic efficiently.

She commended the government school students of GMHS RC-1, GMHS RC-2, and Primary School, Dhanas, as well as the participating NGOs, for their highly informative exhibition on waste management, water purification, and recycling. Taking a personal interest, the Commissioner visited each stall at the exhibition, which showcased sustainability projects constructed using waste materials. She interacted with the children, lauded their efforts, and provided valuable guidance for further improvement.

The exhibited educational models served as excellent examples of the reduce, reuse, and recycle (RRR) concept. The students demonstrated their creativity by utilizing discarded materials such as waste paper, used plastic bottles, cardboard, clothes, wool, old newspapers, toys, coconut shells, ice cream sticks, and various others. Notably, the exhibition also featured a range of items manufactured from plastic waste, including planters, tiles, T-shirts, tiffin box covers, coasters, and more.

The dedicated Bottles for Change Stall by the students highlighted numerous exhibits:

1. Creative utilization of used PET bottles for the creation of fabrics, shirts, T-shirts, soft toy stuffing, pillows, and more.

2. HDPE recycling into granules for the production of pens, cups, organizers, and stationery items.

3. LDPE transformation into granules to create pots, buckets, boards, toys, and various other products.

4. Sterile and sorted medical waste repurposed into pellets, bricks, and other useful materials.

5. MLP (Multi-Layer Plastic) processed into sheets for the construction of school furniture, dustbins, boards, stands, and more.

6. Mixed low-value plastic to be processed for agricultural pipes.

The Commissioner inspired the school students to initiate positive change within society by emphasizing the significance of source segregation and proper disposal of all types of used plastic into designated bins. She shared her personal experience of using cloth bags instead of plastic bags and encouraged young minds to follow suit.

In further support of the cause, the Commissioner inaugurated the installation of used plastic collection bins in all three schools – GMHS RC-1, GMHS RC-2, and Primary School, Dhanas. These bins will facilitate the collection of used plastics to be sent for recycling. She called upon the area councillor and Principal of Dhanas School to collaborate with Bisleri in their joint efforts to eliminate plastic littering in Dhanas and ensure that all used plastic is properly recycled.

*Chandigarh December 5:* Aiming to provide essential skills/Knowledge to accurately complete the ‘CT/PT Grading ‘, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) conducted an online training session as part of the Clean Toilets campaign, with a specific focus on Toilet Grading. The designated Self-Help Group (SHG) Master Trainers, other team members, and officials from the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) attended the session at the Municipal Corporation Office.

During the virtual training, the Toilet Grading teams gained a comprehensive understanding of the parameters involved in the grading process. The session provided an opportunity for participants to address any queries or concerns they had, ensuring a clear understanding of the grading criteria. The grading exercise is set to begin on 15th December, coinciding with the Good Governance Day on 25th December.

The Clean Toilets campaign, launched by MoHUA, aims to improve sanitation facilities across the country. One of the key aspects of this campaign is the grading of public and community toilets based on predefined parameters. By implementing a standardized grading system, the campaign aims to enhance the overall quality and cleanliness of public sanitation facilities.

The Master Trainers who participated in the Toilet Grading training will play a crucial role in disseminating this knowledge within their respective communities of women SHG members. Their understanding of the grading process will empower them to assess and grade toilets accurately, contributing to the overall success of the Clean Toilets campaign.

This joint effort between the Swachh Bharat Mission and DAY-NULM in Chandigarh is an exemplary collaboration that prioritizes sanitation, inclusivity, and empowerment. The dedicated team of SHGs associated with DAY-NULM, consisting of nine groups named Shagun, Pryshth, Khwahish, Angel, Luckey, Megha, Pari, Somya, and Divya, is leading the charge. Comprising 17 women, this diverse team brings a wealth of expertise and commitment to ensure the successful implementation of the toilet grading exercise across the city.

With a total of 331 public conveniences, including Community Toilets (CT) and Public Toilets (PT), scheduled for assessment, the scale of this endeavor is considerable. Each facility will undergo a meticulous grading process based on a predefined set of criteria, leaving no aspect unexamined in the pursuit of excellence.

Municipal Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra IAS stated, “Recognizing the importance of equipping the SHG members with the necessary skills and knowledge, comprehensive training sessions will be organised by MC Chandigarh in collaboration with DAY-NULM’s SHG team before the grading exercise commences. These sessions will cover essential aspects of the grading process, ensuring that the team is well-versed in the evaluation criteria and equipped to carry out their responsibilities with precision and professionalism.”

She further emphasized, “To further empower the SHG team, official authorization letters will be provided, reaffirming the significance of their role in this crucial campaign. Additionally, their diligent work will be duly recognized through fixed remuneration, demonstrating the value and appreciation for their efforts.

The collaboration between the Swachh Bharat Mission and DAY-NULM stands as a shining example of collective action driving positive change. By leveraging the expertise and dedication of the SHGs, this partnership aims to elevate the standards of cleanliness and sanitation in Chandigarh’s public conveniences, promoting inclusivity and empowering communities.

This toilet grading initiative is a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting cleanliness and hygiene nationwide. Through such collaborative endeavors, it is believed that the Clean Toilets Campaign will not only revolutionize public conveniences but also foster a sense of dignity and responsibility among citizens, forming the foundation for a healthier and more prosperous society.

The Citizen Summit, organized to recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions to various societal causes, featured 13 categories, ranging from education and CSR to sports, innovation for social impact, and more. Among the standout moments was the selection of “Ms. Jashanjot Kaur Brar” in the “Volunteerism category”. After rigorous evaluation by a distinguished jury, Brar emerged as the sole recipient of this esteemed recognition, outshining nominees from five countries. The number of applicants were in hundreds.

Pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy at Panjab University, Brar focuses on Community Participation in Water and Sanitation Management in District Patiala, Punjab State in the Supervisionof Dr Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work. She has been engaged in academic discourse, she has presented over fifteen research papers at International and national conferences, covering essential topics such as climate change, water governance, and community health. With three publications under her belt, she demonstrates a profound understanding of critical issues and a commitment to sharing knowledge for societal betterment shared Gaurav Gaur.

In her previous role as a Community Development Specialist at the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation Punjab, Brar played a pivotal role in implementing crucial missions like Jal Jeevan and Swachh Bharat across 350 villages. Her expertise extends to roles as a Rural Development & Management Specialist and Resource Person, showcasing her ability to coordinate and execute initiatives effectively said Gaurav Gaur.

Brar, a UGC NET cleared individual and a certified master trainer at the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in Hyderabad, has also made impactful contributions as a resource person at the State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayats, Govt. of Punjab.

The Department of Community Education and Disability Studies observed an International day of Persons with Disabilities on 2nd December, 2023 at three schools of Chandigarh, 1. Govt. Model High School, Sector 25, 2. Govt. Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, 3. Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sarangpur, Chandigarh. The theme of the programme was “Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for, with and by children with special needs” The objectives of the program were: to make the awareness about protection of the rights, prevention, to ensure the sustainable development of people with special needs. To achieve the objectives, many events were organised; drawing competition among identified children with special needs and among children having learning difficulty at basic level, poster presentation and essay writing by the students, Rally held by the students of Department of Community Education, school students and with community. Dr Md. Saifur Rahman, Chairperson of the department said that the people of the community must collaborate with school in their locality to boost children’s ability and attitude towards joyful life. Society should believe in the abilities of children with special needs and role of the society is to understand the persons affected by the disabilities. Mr. Nitin Raj and Md. Taukir Alam were also present on this occasion. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Nitin Raj.

IGNOU Term End Examinations December, 2023 are going to commence from 01st December, 2023 and will conclude on 09th January, 2024 in the region.

The students may download the Hall Tickets from the University website http://www.ignou.ac.in/ and appear in the examination.

Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh, Senior Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Center, Chandigarh informed that students are advised to be in possession of the valid Identity Card issued by the University at the time of admission during the examination. Under Regional Centre Chandigarh 10367 eligible students have been issued Hall Tickets for this examination who will be appearing in different programmes/courses.  IGNOU RC Chandigarh Academics will be monitoring examination activities and monitoring team has also been deputed by IGNOU headquarter, New Delhi for the smooth conduct of Term End Examination in the region. IGNOU Regional Center Chandigarh has established 09 Examination Centers for TEE December, 2023 including 02 Exam Center in Jails at Chandigarh and Ambala for jail inmates.

The Examination Centres have been instructed to allow students, with a valid Identity Card, to appear in examination, even if they do not possess the Hall Ticket (Examination Intimation Slips), but their names exist in the list of examinees for that centre.

Students are advised to be in possession of the valid Identity Card issued by the University during the Examination. Mobile phones and any other electronic gadgets are not permitted inside the examination hall.

Swachhata Ki Pathshala 2.0 at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas*

*Chandigarh, November 29:* As part of the ongoing initiative of Wednesdays for Water & Waste Management in local schools and colleges, an advocacy and environmental awareness programme was organized at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas jointly by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, Eco Club of GMSSS, Dhanas and Yuvsatta, a NGO.

The Eco Club students at the school presented on the occasion a colourful programme with a skit, a giddha, speeches and group song on themes of water and waste management. Poetry, Essay and elocution contest on the theme of waste and waste management was also conducted and fifteen winners of the same were honoured by prominent dignitaries with autobiographies of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing the gathering MCC representatives, shared that separating, reducing, reusing, recycling and composting are good options for managing school waste. Educate staff and students about using other ways of disposing of waste, such as recycling, reusing and composting. Also, they added that as part of the ongoing #cleantoiletscampaign, the MC team has taken the opportunity to sensitize students about the importance of following basic etiquette while using public toilets. Let’s unite in the mission to maintain clean and hygienic public conveniences for all!

On the occasion Mr. Pramod Sharma and Mrs Seema Rani the School Principal felicitated special class wise ‘Water and Waste Warriors’ appointed today to promote this message of environmental conservation among their peers in the school.

Mr. Pramod Sharma added that our world water supply is finite and limited. He motivated students to stop water wastage at every step and told the school staff that kids learn by doing, and nothing helps make them aware of water-wise practices better than asking them to tag along while you look for toilet, faucet and showerhead leaks. Another good option is to perform a school water audit and later home water audit with them. And show your kids you mean business when it comes to good water management. 

In her vote of thanks Seema Rani, Principal shared that they always look for opportunities to train their students for the present day and future challenges. And water and waste both are becoming global challenges today, which we all can overcome by adopting the Gandhan mantra of this Wednesdays for Water & Waste Management i.e. ‘Why Use More Than You Need’.

The event started with a special evening Satsang on 25th November, Saturday where Dr Sambit Patra,  Chairman ITDC and  national spokesperson of BJP, an ardent  devotee of Sri Sri Thakur ji  shared his 30years of life experiences after accepting the Satnam of Sri Sri Thakur and enthralled the audience with his chorus of Jay Radhe Kirtan with the devotees. *Chandigarh November 25:-* Smt. Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, UT, Chandigarh today inaugurated state of art Community Centre at Kajheri, Sector 52, here in presence of Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Lakhbir Singh, area councillor, other councilors and prominent persons of the area.

While addressing the gathering, the Member Parliament said that the Community centers offer an opportunity for people to become involved in a wide range of activities. They promote a sense of belonging and social inclusion. They provide a place where the community can meet and engage in collective activities. She said the centers are strategically located to serve the citizens which are used for cultural programmes, to organize marriages and for other social activities.

She said the idea of the community centre is to offer a place where all members of the community from young to old can meet for various activities. All too often it’s the only such place available in a community.

On the occasion, City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta said that the community centre building has been constructed covering area of 93798 Sq. Ft. Rupees 7.22 crores have been incurred in the construction of the building at Kajheri, Sector 52. He said that this community centre has capacity to accommodate 500 people in one time party at the main hall and sufficient parking space.

He said that the community centre was best of its kind in Chandigarh and consisting of main hall of 89’x55’ and room for Sampark centre, care taker room, bridal room, dormitory room with dressing room, office and toilets for ladies and gents in the ground floor. While indoor games, lobby, library, meeting rooms, open terrace and toilets for ladies and gents in the first floor.

The Mayor said that this community centre is a good asset to the residents of local area as they can organize parties and other programmes in very nominal government rates near their doorsteps.
