Panjab University Chandigarh in collaboration with Chandigarh Rugby Football Association is organising the 5th Junior National Rugby Championship at Panjab University Chandigarh from 14-6-19 to 16-6-19 . Team consisting of total 32 Boys and 24 Girls are participating in the championship.
The championship was inaugurated by Prof Karamjit Singh , Registrar, PU , in his welcome address, informed that this occasion is dedicated to commemorate The 550th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He gave details of the contribution of Guru Nanak Dev ji for upliftment of society.

On the third day of 5 day Summer School of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) being held at the Department of Physics, PU, talks on Physics, Chemistry and Environmental Science were delivered.
In the first session, Dr. P. K. Ahluwalia from Himachal Pradesh University, delivered two very interesting talks, first one on Discovery of Electron and second one on ‘what can I do after Schooling’. Prof. D. Mehta from Physics Department, introduced various basic concepts on measurements and corrected various misconceptions regarding Solar Eclipse and use of microwave radiations.
In the afternoon session, Prof. A.S. Ahluwalia from Botany Department talked about the effect of effluents on the climate change. He discussed various modern life styles being adopted by us which are causing more carbon dioxide footprint on mother earth.
Dr. Jayanti Dutta from Human Resource development Centre, PU, had an interactive session and highlighted how one’s thinking process transforms to a more open and creative one with the help of simple tasks and exercises from science.
Dr. Saurabh Jain and Mr. Pramod Prashar interconnected the Physics with Chemistry knowledge through easy experimental demonstrations.

Ms. Amritpal Kaur, Department of Physics, Panjab University, is going to present the research paper entitled “Binding of glycopeptides antibiotic with gold nanoparticles: Role of surfactants” in the 9th International Colloids Conference to be held during 16 – 19 June, 2019 at Barcelona, Spain. The travel is fully funded by The Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) international travel grant for the paper presentation.
Ms. Amritpal Kaur is doing her research work under the supervision of Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Department of Physics, Panjab University and their research focus is on the selective drug binding to the metal nanoparticles. The gold nanoparticles are explored for specific site delivery of various drugs. In this paper the binding mechanism of glycopeptides by modifying surface of gold nanoparticles has been discussed.

Panjab University is conducting Entrance Test for admission to B.A./B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) Five Years Integrated Course on Sunday, 16th June, 2019. The timings of the test are from 10.00 am to 11.30 am. About 5400 candidates will appear in this test. Total 18 examination centres have been created, eleven at Panjab University Campus and seven in local colleges at Chandigarh. The route directions to the candidates for examination centres at PU Campus are as under:-
Centre No. 1 to 4 – Gate No. 1
Centre No. 5 & 8 – Gate No. 3
Centre No. 6 & 7 – Gate No. 2
Centre No. 9 to 11 – South Campus, Sector 25, Opp. Gate No. 3

Day 2 of the five day Summer School of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) being held at the Department of Physics, Panjab University, was mainly knitted with Physics and Chemistry demonstration, in which science was made simple and best by use of daily used items. In the first session, Dr. R. K. Awasthi from St. George College, Agra, gave low-cost demonstration to understand basic principles of Science Mechanics, optics and magnetism. He corrected various misconceptions which are prevailing among students. Dr. J.S. Sehrawat from Department of Anthropology apprised the students about the science of mankind that is Anthropology and its applied aspects. He discussed the anthropological case study related to identification of Ajnala skeltal remains. Students had healthy interaction and showed deep interest in pursuing higher education in Anthropology. Dr. Rohit K. Sharma from department of Chemistry gave glimpses of the role biomolecules like DNA, Proteins, fatty acids and carbohydrates in our body.

Mehrchand Mahajan Boys Hostel No. 1 in association with Nautical Institute (NI) and Department of Defence and National Security Studies, conducted Fire Safety, Assessment and Awareness Programme here today.
The Committee consisting of Capt. Ahluwalia as Chairman, Cadet Simranjit Kaur and Mr. Harshit Seaman conducted the programme and delivered lecture come awareness talk to the staff members. The various fire safety issues regarding Hostel Mess/canteen, laundering and tailoring sites were discussed. Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Students Welfare in his address shared his views about the recent fire accidents in Surat, Gujrat in which students from private coaching centres died.
Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden BH-1 informed that such type of awareness and drill to be organised in other hostels of PU in faced manner. NI is an international organization of seafaring professional based in London. Capt. M.S. Kahlon is the chairman of Chandigarh Chapter is a NINW, Chandigarh region Branch organisation under the umbrella of NI.

The delegation of 8 scientists led by a science policy expert, Professor Rupinder Tewari, Coordinator, DST-Centre for Policy Research, Panjab University, Chandigarh will be visiting UK to participate in a one week workshop on ‘Science, Technology, Innovation (STI) Policy for Turbulent Times’ being held in University of Sussex, Brighton, UK from June 17-21, 2019. The visit is sponsored by Department of Science & Technology, GoI. The visit will help the scientists to understand the STI policy of UK and identify good practices that can be emulated in the Indian ecosystem. Last year, a similar visit of Indian scientists to USA was sponsored by DST, GoI to get a feel of US Science Policy and its administration. This visit was also coordinated by Prof. Tewari. Dr Mansimran Kaur, a young and bright STI postdoc fellow of DST-CPR at PU has been chosen by DST, GoI as a part of the delegation. Other delegates have been chosen from IIT-Delhi, IISc-Bangalore and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lukhnow.

The fully functional EOC for disabled students will look into all the issues and demands related to them.

Prof. Devinder Mehta, Dean Sciencesin his Welcome address motivated the students to be innovative and take up Science as future. He also gave details of Honours School Courses in various Science subjects being run at PU. He urged the students to realize their potential and skills to realize their interest.
Prof. Raj Kumar. Vice-Chancellor, PU, delivered motivational words for NASI. He appreciated the efforts of NASI for running Science summer schools for 10+2 students which inspire to take science for their undergraduate programs. He laid stress on innovation, creative ideas and promised to make Incubation Centre in Panjab University Campus for students. He urged the students to interact informally with the scientist/academician to get inspired and motivated.
Prof. I.B.S. Passi, President, NASI, Chandigarh Chapter, shared about the functioning of NASI.
Prof. K.N. Pathak, Former VC, PU, said that there is an appreciable initiative from NASI to support students and motivate them towards sciences.
More than 200 students from various schools of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are participating in the Summer School.
Three lectures were delivered on the first day after the inaugural. Prof. Neelima R. Kumar from Zoology Department delivered very informative lecture on importance of honey bees, their types and life cycle. Prof. K.K. Bhasin, Senior Professor from Chemistry department discussed with the students ‘how to appreciate and understand chemistry’. Prof. Suman Bala Beri eminent Physicist delivered a talk on understanding the mysteries of nature and creation of universe as a step forward with The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment.
In the evening, the day concluded with visit to museums of Zoology, Geology and Anthropology departments, Botanical Garden, and Cyclotron accelerator facility in the Physics department.

The Post-Doctoral Fellows Academic Forum (PUPDFAF) in coordination with Panjab University Administration organised an Orientation Seminar on “Enrolment in Post-Doctoral Fellowships in India: PDF’s Experience and Guidance”, here today. The seminar was presided over by Dean of University Instructions (DUI) and Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Prof. Shankarji Jha.
Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Emanuel Nahar was present at the event and briefed the students about the outline of a PDF proposal. The seminar was held at Centre for Police Administration.
Four PDF’s from different disciplines and departments highlighted the procedure to apply for their fellowships. These included Dr. Priyanka Garg who shared her experience about applying for Dr. S Radhakrishnan Fellowship, Dr. Rajan Swami from UIPS who shared about Dr. DS Kothari fellowship, Dr. Pooja Chopra who shared about ICSSR PDF Scheme; Dr. Neha Miglani discussed the UGC Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Women procedure.
Dr. Jaideep Kumar, PDF in Centre for Public Health and the Seminar Convenor informed that the response of this orientation program has been tremendous. We are now going to the second phase of this initiative, where we are inviting PhD students to discuss their proposals for a feedback to them. Among those present at the occasion were Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Professor and former Director UIAMS, Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Chairperson of Centre for Police Administration and other senior faculty members. In a novel initiative the PDF Academic Forum has invited the Ph.D scholars to discuss their PDF proposals of Ph.D for higher research with them before June 26, 2019 for a genuine feedback so that improvements can be made in the same before submitting to agencies like ICSSR and UGC once the fellowships reopen.103 PhD scholars of PU attended the seminar.
