The Summer School of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) being held at the Department of Physics, PU

Chandigarh:

The Summer School of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) being held at the Department of Physics, PU, during 12-16th June, 2019. On 15th June, 2019, the session was mainly knitted with Microbiology, Mathematics and Astrophysics topics.

        In the first session, Prof. Praveen Rishi from Department of Microbiology, PU, apprised the students about the Microbiology aspects and its applied aspects. 


        Prof. Dinesh Khurana from the Department of Mathematics talked about the prime numbers, their properties and applications. 


        Prof. Sandeep Sahijpal spoke about the ISRO programmes in space science and Technology. In the evening, students had glimpses of sky using an 11-inch telescope. 


In the valedictory function, feedback was taken from the participants and their mentors regarding the summer school. 


        Prof. K.N. Pathak, former Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, and Prof. D.V. Rai, Former Vice Chancellor, Shobhit University, gave awards to the selected students for excelling in various aspects of School. On the last day, students visited the biodiversity heritage site at Cholti Kheri, Fatehgarh Sahib. 

 
        Dr. Gurharmahinder Singh from Punjab Biodiversity Board explained about the biodiversity site of ‘300-year-old’ banyan tree. The site has flourishing flora and fauna including colony of peacocks, owls, several species of reptiles such as snakes, monitor lizards, garden lizards, insects, arthropods, millipedes, nematodes and epiphytes, bryophytes, fungi, algae and lichens. Students also visited villages, Gurudwaras at Shri Fatehgarh Sahib and Shri Anandpur Sahib to have feeling of the Punjabi culture.

        Dr. Shipra Gupta took over the charge as warden of girls hostel No. 9, Amrita Pritam Hall. Dr. Kamalpreet, handed over the charge in the presence of Dean Student Welfare (Women), Prof. Neena Capalash. Dr. Shipra Gupta is the second warden of this hostel since its inception.

Youth Leadership Camp for PU students started

Chandigarh June 17, 2019  

The Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University Chandigarh has been organizing a nine Days camp on “Youth Leadership Training Hiking-Trekking and Rock climbing camp-2019” at Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, District Solan,(Himachal Pradesh). An Orientation programme in respect of this camp was organized by the Department of youth Welfare in the Mahatma  Hans Raj Hall of the 
University,  to enlighten the objectives along with rules to be followed by the campers .

Dean of University Instruction Prof Shankarji Jha, Registrar Dr Karamjeet Singh, Controller of Examination Dr Parvinder Singh, Director Sports Dr. Parminder Singh, Film & TV Artist Mr Bal Mukand Sharma blessed the campers and appreciated the efforts of the department for organizing such activities time to time.Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Youth Welfare extended the warm welcome to dignitaries and participants .The Speaker of the Session was Dr Rakesh Khullar, senior Medical Officer 
from the University delivered a wonderful and useful talk regarding first aid  to the camper for their safety measures.   Prof Shankarji Jha recited the mantra and pray to god for the success of the camp. Mr. Bal Mukand Sharma shared his lifetime experiences with the participants. Each dignitary also motivated the students for the camp. Dr Monita Dhiman, Administrative Officer of the camp said that the camp has planned to 
merge learning with practical experiences. The total 132 Students and 6 teachers from various affiliated colleges of University are participating in the camp,  as informed by Dr Monita Dhiman.

Rugby Football Association is organising the 5th Junior National Rugby Championship at PU

Chandigarh, June 14, 2019  

Panjab University Chandigarh in collaboration with Chandigarh Rugby Football Association is organising the 5th Junior National Rugby Championship at Panjab University Chandigarh from 14-6-19 to 16-6-19 . Team consisting of total 32 Boys and 24 Girls are participating in the championship. 
 

 The championship was inaugurated by Prof Karamjit Singh , Registrar, PU , in his welcome  address,  informed  that  this  occasion is dedicated to commemorate The  550th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.  He gave details of the contribution of  Guru Nanak Dev ji for upliftment  of society.

Day 3 of Summer School at PU

Chandigarh June 14, 2019

On the third day of 5 day Summer School of the National Academy of
Sciences, India (NASI) being held at the Department of Physics, PU,
talks on Physics, Chemistry and  Environmental Science were delivered.

In the first session, Dr. P. K. Ahluwalia from Himachal Pradesh
University, delivered two very interesting talks, first one on
Discovery of Electron and second one on ‘what can I do after
Schooling’. Prof. D. Mehta from Physics Department, introduced various
basic concepts on measurements and corrected various misconceptions
regarding Solar Eclipse and use of microwave radiations.

In the afternoon session, Prof. A.S. Ahluwalia from Botany Department
talked about the effect of effluents on the climate change. He
discussed various modern life styles being adopted by us which are
causing more carbon dioxide footprint on mother earth.

 Dr. Jayanti Dutta from Human Resource development Centre, PU, had an
interactive session and highlighted how one’s thinking process
transforms to a more open and creative one with the help of simple
tasks and exercises from science.

Dr. Saurabh Jain and Mr. Pramod Prashar interconnected the Physics
with Chemistry knowledge through easy experimental demonstrations.

PU Researcher to present paper in Spain

Chandigarh June 14, 2019

Ms. Amritpal Kaur, Department of Physics, Panjab University, is going
to present the research paper entitled “Binding of glycopeptides
antibiotic with gold nanoparticles: Role of surfactants” in the 9th
International Colloids Conference to be held during 16 – 19 June, 2019
at Barcelona, Spain. The travel is fully funded by The Science &
Engineering Research Board (SERB) international travel grant for the
paper presentation.

Ms. Amritpal Kaur is doing her research work under the supervision of
Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Department of Physics, Panjab University and their
research focus is on the selective drug binding to the metal
nanoparticles. The gold nanoparticles are explored for specific site
delivery of various drugs. In this paper the binding mechanism of
glycopeptides by modifying surface of gold nanoparticles has been
discussed.
