MCC panel held meeting to discuss carcasses centre

Chandigarh, August 1:- A meeting of sub Committee under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Asha Jaswal was held here today which was attended by other members of committee including Mrs Sunita Dhawan, Sh Rajesh Gupta, Sh Vinod Aggarwal,  Dr Amritpal Singh         MOH,MCC,  Sh N.P.Sharma, GM/CSCL, Sh Amit Sharma, SDE, MOH, Dr M.S.Kamboj, SSH cum Convener and other concerned officers.

          during the meeting detailed discussions held and the committee decided following points.


              1.Mr Amit Sharma explained the technology and procedure to be used for incineration of carcasses. 
              2.There will be two incinerators, one for small animals and another for large animals of 50 kg/ hour and 300kg/ hour capacity respectively. These will run on LPG .There will be primary and secondary chambers. The carcasses will be incinerated at a very high temperature. There will be a chimney of 30 metre height for smoke.Wet scrubber will be there for dissolving the ash and effluent treatment plant for water treatment. The real time data will be sent to Pollution Control Committee/Board.


              3.Sh N.P.Sharma informed that there will also be a provision of cold storage to avoid putrefaction of carcass.
              4.Dr Kamboj informed the members that presently the dead animals are lifted by hired contractor and these are flayed in open for skin and bones.This method is not environment friendly and against the norms of Biomedical Waste Rules, 1998.


              The members discussed options of land for incineration plant in the city like Industrial area, Maloya,Manimajra etc. Dr Kamboj informed that this type of activity is required to be at least 10 km away from airport and its funnel zone.

Sh. N.P. Sharma informed that the ash generated after incineration is to be deposited in the landfill which is nearby.This will avoid undue transportation costs.


              The members were of the view to visit Nashik in Maharashtra at an early where this facility exists with Municipal Corporation. It was proposed by the Chairperson that Mrs Farmila Councillor shall also accompany the Committee to Nashik to see the facility. 


              The members visited the earmarked site in Sec 25( W) after the meeting.

Mayor & Commissioner visits different areas of city on Thursday

Chandigarh, August 1:- 

Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor of Chandigarh and Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh today visited various parts of city to take stock of ongoing works initiated by MCC and problems in the rural areas.

The Mayor & Commissioner was accompanied by all senior officers including Sh. Manoj Bansal, Chief Engineer, Sh. Shelender Singh, SE, Public Health, Sh. Sanjay Arora, SE, B&R, Executive engineers and Sub Divisional Engineers all engineering wing of MCC.

In the morning time the Mayor and Commissioner started visit from Sector 27 with plantation drive at a park near Chandigarh Press Club alongwith Sh. Devender Singh Babla, area councilor and local residents. After taking round of the area the Mayor and Commissioner visited Sector 25 alongwith area councilor Smt. Sheela Devi and other concerned officers.

The Commissioner asked the Executive Engineer, Horticulture Division to develop the parks properly i.e. by providing grassing, flower beds, huts, benches, children play equipments and footpaths, wherever required. He also took round of the slum area at sector 25, where the Commissioner directed the public health engineers to check the feasibility of renovating the toilet blocks, constructed by the Administration, which are now in abandon shape. The Commissioner also directed the officers of Estate branch, MCC to check the status of the toilet blocks, whether it belongs to MCC or falls under the jurisdiction of Administration and also check whether the toilet blocks be renovated by MCC.

During the visit at Community Centre, Sector 25, the Commissioner directed the concerned engineers of B&R wing to prepare estimate to upgrade/renovate the community centre immediately.

In the evening the Mayor & Commissioner visited Raipur Kalan village alongwith Sh. Rambir Bhatti and other prominent leaders of the area. They apprised the team of officers that the cremation ground in the village be renovated and rest of the land adjoining the cremation ground may be used for developing park. The Commissioner asked the chief Engineer to conduct a survey in the area and took up the matter with Architect, Chandigarh Administration for development of the area.

The Commissioner directed the Public Health engineers to level the drainage pipelines in the village and resolve the problem of sewerage blockage. He asked the engineers to prepare estimates for carpet the roads wherever required and use pavers in the narrow streets. The Commissioner asked the engineers to check the water supply lines in the area with regard to enhance water supply or replacement of pipelines etc.

On the demand of villagers, the Commissioner asked the engineers to check feasibility to provide community centre over there. He also asked to check other issues including repair of street lights and provision of new light points in the village and development of parks etc.

During the visit at Raipur Khurd, the local residents demanded enhancement of water supply to the area especially in the Tribune Colony. The commissioner asked concerned engineers to strengthen the sewerage disposal system in the area, recarpetting of roads, provision of street lights and enhancement of water supply to the village.

In addition to that the zonal commissioners including Sh. Sanjay Kumar Jha, IAS, Special Commissioner, Sh. Tilak Raj, Sh. S.K. Jain and Sh. Anil Kumar Garg, Additional Commissioners also visited their respective areas alongwith concerned engineers to take stock of the ongoing works of MCC and progress of the issues taken up in the last visits.

The special focus was on Jal Shakti Abhiyan, under which the zonal commissioner checked the possibilities of rainwater harvesting in their respective areas alongwith tree plantation in the parks/green belts and open spaces.

Tree Plantation Drive at PU

Chandigarh August 1, 2019

 Tree Plantation drive was organized by Music Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh which was inaugurated by Prof. Karamjeet Singh, the Registrar by planting a sapling outside the Music Department. Dr. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council (DCDC) and Dr. Mukesh Arora appreciated the endeavour of the department and exhorted to other department to emulate the save. Registrar said that in the light of global warming urbanization we
need to grow more and more trees, so that future generation could breathe in healthy environment.

            Dr. Neelam Paul, Chairperson of the Department informed that this tree plantation drive has been launched not only to beautify the environment but also to spread awareness among younger generation in order to achieve sustainable drive.

PU extends date for Radio Production Course

Chandigarh August 1, 2019 

The last date for submitting admission forms for 25 seats for Post Graduate Diploma in Radio Production at the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been extended. Candidates interested in seeking admission in the One Year Program may now submit their forms till August 5.

        The newly introduced Diploma will train students in the various aspects of curating and producing content for Radio. The students will get first hand experience of how a radio station works at PU in-house Community Radio Station. The course has been introduced keeping in mind the current boom in commercial and community radio 
stations which opens up a plethora of jobs in the sector.  


        Interested candidates can visit the PU website for more details and for filling the admission form. The selection process includes a written test followed by personal interview.

Workshop at Microbiology Dept. PU,

Chandigarh August 1, 2019 

 A UGC SAP sponsored two-day workshop was started in the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, by the Chandigarh Unit of Association of Microbiologists of India (CU-AMI) dealing with Next Gen Oxford Nanopore Genome Sequencing Technology. 

The aim of the workshop is to spread awareness about new technologies among the University and college students of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Students and teachers from various colleges in Chandigarh participated with enthusiasm.

The workshop started with a talk by Dr. Jaysimha from Imperial Life Sciences followed by a knowhow demo for the students. The CU-AMI President Prof. Prince Sharma and Secretary Dr. Naveen Gupta have been making efforts for a long time to make students aware of Microbiological issues and developments through conferences, 
workshops and awareness programs. It is for these reasons that the unit has been adjudged the best in the country for four consecutive years. The workshop will also include elaborations on recent developments in RT-PCR technology by LCGC- Agilent Technologies Co.

MoU between PU & Chandigarh Police

Chandigarh:

Memorandum of Understanding between Panjab University, Chandigarh and Chandigarh Police has been signed on the occasion of an interactive session on Science of Yoga in Stress Management at PU, here today. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, P.U. and Sh. Sanjay Baniwal (IPS), Director General of Police, UT Chandigarh signed the MOU in the presence of Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh who was the Chief Guest of the occasion.

Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bangalore also graced the occasion. H.R. Nagendra is a personal yoga consultant of Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi and is a recipient of Padma Shri as well as Yoga Shri title from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

 The main objective of this MoU is to enhance R&D and training activities as well as to strengthen the law enforcement and cyber security between both. PU as well as Chandigarh Police is now recognizing the importance of research and development and training in the areas related to Cyber Security, Cyber Intelligence, Forensic
Sciences, Human Rights and other allied areas, and facilitate innovation and deployment of solutions. Through this MoU both will amalgamate their efforts by pooling their expertise and resources and to form a nucleus for promoting Research & Development and training by exploiting the expertise, intellectual and infrastructural
capabilities of both the parties and hence foster relationship between academia and law enforcement.This will ultimately strengthen the criminal justice system.Training will also be imparted in Forensics, Cyber Security and Human Rights to the Police personnel as well as some short term training/refresher courses to the Police manpower
across various ranks in these areas will also be identified.

Chandigarh Police can now collaborate on the possible conceptual input related to the Forensic evidence and their
Examination of case work.Based on the problems related to cyber security and applied forensics, research projects and joint proposals will also be submitted to the funding agencies. Exchange of research documents/findings on a case to case basis will also be possible.Some training components may be digitized and provided in the form of
online modules.Sharing of laboratory, library and other such resources on availability for bilateral applications without any financial burden on either party will be done. Under this MOU possibilities of provision of seats for serving Police Personnel in the academic courses related to their need will be identified in the concerned
departments.Duty leave of police personnel for pursuing these degree programmes will be given.Visits of police personnel and staff, faculty, scientists and students to each other’s workplace and laboratories will also be possible.

Premchand Jayanti celebrated at Dept. of Hindi, PU

Chandigarh July 31, 2019

Department of Hindi, Panjab University today celebrated Premchand Jayanti by organizing a special program with events like quiz contest, declamation and dramatic presentation. The event paid tribute to the iconic writer, Munshi Premchand, who is regarded as one of the most celebrated short story and novel writer in Hindi Literature. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Dept of Hindi, informed that, “Around 18 students from city colleges and university departments participated in the quiz and declamation contests. Both the events helped the students understand and appreciate the rich body of work that Munshi Premchand created.” He further said that , “ The declamation contest on the topic, ‘If Premchand were alive today?’ dealt with appreciating Premchand’s unique ability to mirror the social issues of the Indian society in his stories, which makes his work relevant in today’s times.

Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions, PU, was the chief guest for the event and appreciated the efforts of Dept of Hindi in organizing literary events periodically and being the first and only Department to avail the benefits of Earn while you learn Scheme. Cheques were also distributed the students of Dept of Hindi, under the ‘Earn While you Learn’ Scheme of the University during the event.

A team of students from Dept of Hindi, performed a dramatic presentation on Premchand’s short story ‘Sadgati’ which revolves around the social issue of cast system. Teams from MCM DAV College, GCG-11, GCG-42, GCM-11, Dept of Evening Studies and Dept of Hindi, participated in the Quiz. The host team, Dept of Hindi, stood first, but withdrew from the competition, passing on the first spot to Dept of Evening Studies, and the runners up spot to GCG-11 College. Declamation contest had participants from S.D. College, Dept of Law, PU; MCM DAV College, PGGC-11; Dept of Hindi, PU; PGGCG- 11. First position was bagged by Arshi, from Dept. of Law; Siddharth Sharan from S.D. College stood second and Amandeep Kaur from MCMDAV College stood third. The contest was adjudged by Prof. Pankaj Malvia from Dept of Russian Studies, Dr. Ali Abbas from Dept. of Urdu and Dr. Namita Gupta from Center for Human Rights and Duties, PU.

Prof. Satyapal Sehgal, Prof. Baijnath Prasad, Prof. Neerja Sood and Dr. Ashok Kumar, from Dept of Hindi attended the event.
