PU Gets MAKA Trophy

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh informed about PU getting prestigious award of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad(MAKA) Trophy for the session 2018-19, here today, while addressing the media persons. While congratulating on this achievement, after a gap of 14 years, he added that this has been achieved on 
the basis of excellent sports performances of the outstanding sports persons of PU. He appreciated the team efforts consisting of University Officials, Principals and Physical Education personnel of affiliated colleges, coaches, administrative and ground staff of the Directorate of Sports, various National and State Sports Federations etc. Since his joining PU, he has always emphasised on Sports and taking all steps to further enhance the visibility of PU sports and is taking all necessary steps for getting more funds which will enhance the visibility.

PU VC informed about concerted efforts being made for having MoUs with Foreign Universities, Sports Fedrations and Private Sports Club to give a boost to sports at PU and also to improve future facilities. Efforts are also being made for the Development Sports Academies, Centre of Excellence in different Games and to establish 
New Khelo India Academies.

        Dr. S.S. Sangha, PU Fellow & President, PU Sports Committee said that this achievement has been a team work of PU and its affiliated colleges. 


        Dr. Parminder Singh Ahluwalia, Director, Physical Education & Sports, PU while appreciating the motivation provided by PU VC to the sports persons from time to time which played vital role for winning this presitigous MAKA Trophy. He informed about all the efforts made by PU Sports persons from the last five years to get the MAKA 
Trophy. He further informed that there are total no. of 37 games at International, Inter-University & Khelo India Games, the points of which are calculated for the award MAKA Trophy -2018-19.  Panjab University has won positions in 31 games out of 37 during All India Inter-University and North Zone Inter-University Competitions.  The 
dominating games which  contribute maximum for the Panjab University are Shooting, Swimming, Water Sports, Cycling, Archery, Athletics, Wushu, Tennis, Gymnastics & Judo.  The contributing factors for the said achievement is as under:-

1.      Summer Coaching camps which are organized every year.
2.      Panjab University outstanding sports persons are given Cash Award every year 
the     amount of which has come to near about 1.5 crore approx..
3.      Development of Sports Infrastructure in various games.
4.      Following Sports Coaching Centres are being run by the Panjab University,       

Chandigarh in various games to give regular training to the players  under the able guidance of     the coaches appointed by Panjab University, Chandigarh and deputed by the Sports Authority of India:

        Talking about future plans of Directorate of Sports, Dr. Parminder informed

        iii)    Archery Arena.

Commissioner Releases poster for sports meet

Chandigarh, August 19:- Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh released  poster for the 116th Sports meet at Khudda Ali Sher, Chandigarh Scheduled to be held on 24th August, 2019 in presence of Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor, M.C.C, Sh. Gurdiyal Singh Baba jee, Sh. Sardar Gurpreet singh, Dr. Hukum Chand and Sh. Avtar singh.

Capacity Building Program at PU

Chandigarh August 19, 2019 

Panjab University Alumni House in collaboration with Social Substance organized a Capacity Building Program. The program was attended by about twenty guides, counselors, teachers, administrators, psychologists etc. who are working with students of various schools and colleges of Chandigarh. 


        Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations, PU  stated that the aim of this  initiative was to create better resources for society by mobilizing existing resources. As Dean, Alumni her goal was to serve the existing alumni and to attract more for better contribution toward Panjab University.  


        Ms. Kamal Malhi, a trained counselor, was resource person for the morning session. She broke the ice with explanation of ‘Namaste’ and extending significance of  greetings to each other. She was affirmative while dissecting the myths of counseling and its need. Her session was full or practical and physical exercises. She taught the 
audience to feel life through own senses. Empathy became the keyword of her lecture.

        Ms. Joginder Mukherje, a clinical counselor, took the second and final session after noon. She used videos to get attention of the audience and got the related to real life situations. She emphasized that counseling was a real art and required to be mastered before applying.  


        Dr. Arun Bansal, Social Substance apprised that this event was one of the events in series initiated in collaboration with PUAA. The real purpose was to get all resources under one roof and effectively use and channelize those. In this direction, several counseling sessions were planned at Panjab University including Hostels.

Punjabi folk, Giddha & Bhangra Mark Teej Mela

A colourful event organised by MCC at Cactus Garden Ramdarbar

Chandigarh, August 18: – The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized the colourful Teej festival with great zeal in the Cactus Garden, Ramdarbar, here today. Smt. Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, UT, Chandigarh was the chief guest during the cultural programme. Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Smt. Sunita Dhawan, Chairperson, Arts, Culture & Sports committee, Sh. Bharat Kumar, area councilor, other councilors & officers of MCC and prominent personalities of area were present during the programme.

The function was marked with Punjabi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, folk dances, songs, fusion of Giddha & Bhangra and Teeian de Geet by famous artists. The audience present in the Mela could not stop themselves to dance on the foot-tapping beats of “Dhol” and popular Punjabi numbers. The Member Parliament stressed upon the necessity to perpetuate cultural values among the masses especially in younger generation. She also enlightened the gathering about the social, religious and historical significance of the Teej Festival.

While addressing the gathering the Mayor said that MCC has made this Mela as an annual feature. He said that people of Chandigarh should know about their rich culture and we the Municipal Corporation are making small effort to gather the precious traditional festivals like Teej. Earlier, Smt. Sunita Dhawan welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries and honoured the chief guest with giving traditional fulkari to her. The chief guest took a round in the Mela in the Cactus Garden.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner lauded the efforts of MCC team organising the Teej event despite the continues rain and arranged beautiful function in the evening by displaying village profile, cultural programmes on stage and traditional peengan. He also appriciated the dedication of the area councillor Sh. Bharat Kumar not only for this programme but also his tireless efforts for the developmental works in his ward.

Other attractions of the Mela was including camel rides, Dholi, Madari, Charkhe, Manjire, Tumbe, Jamura Show, puppet show, Magic show by famous magician Pardeep, different stalls of Govt. schemes awareness etc. The stage was decorated with colourful lights and traditional “Jhandian” flags. East meets West as the streets fill with musical sounds, with everything from traditional folk, beats of Dhol and Teej diya Bolliyan to fusion of Giddha and Bhangra.

Various famous artists including Jaspreet Jassal, Jagjit Singh, Soniya and other enthralled the audience with Punjabi folk, sufi and Teej traditional numbers.

Sanitation committee of MCC meeting held

Chandigarh, August 17:- A meeting of sanitation committee of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the Chairmanship of Sh. Shakti Parkash Devshali, which was attended by members  namely Sh. Hardeep singh, Sh. Bharat kumar, Sh. Mahesh Inder singh, Smt. Heera Negi, Smt. Ravinder Kaur and concerned officers of MCC. During the meeting following issues regarding sanitation discussed:

–         Horticultural waste be cleaned daily basis.

–         Back service lane be checked and cleaned daily and garbage be lifted on daily basis.

–         Grass in the road berms be cut on regular basis.

–         Dustbins be checked and cleaned regularly.

–         Ward wise sanitation drives be organized to check problem regarding garbage.

–         Area sanitation inspectors should check their wards on regular basis.

–         Strict action be taken against the violators of littering.

–         Cow dung be cleaned near community center Ramdarbar on regular basis.

–          Unauthorized meet Shops be checked and removed from the roads sides.

–         The committee resolved to purchase 2 Tata Ace vehicles for cattles catching Squad.

–         Tranquilizer guns will be purchased for catching animals on trial basis.

–         To increase the ranking of Swachh Survekshan continuous cleanliness drives be organised throughout the city.

–         Swachh Survekshan awareness campaigns in the schools and colleges be organised regularly.- Steps will  be taken to discourage use of polythene bags and a market will  be chosen to start Pilot Project. Shopkeepers will  be requested to display boards about ‘Don’t ask for Polythene bags’.- Awareness about ‘Dustbin on wheels’.  All the vehicle owners will be requested to carry small dustbins in their cars so that the do ‘t throw their waste on streets.- An undertaking will be taken from all organizers of social and public functions to ensure cleaning work after every community event.- All the newly wedding couples will be requested to pledge that they will segregate the waste at source and buckets will be distributed in Community Centres at the time of marriage.- School children will be made Brand Ambassadors of cleanliness to ensure cleanliness in the neighbourhood.

Panjab University, Chandigarh has declared the result of Master of Business Administration 2nd Semester Examination,May-2019, here today. The Pass percentage is 95.92%. 98 Candidates appeared and 94 Passed in the Examination.

Commissioner visits village Burail; asks engineers to remove encroachments from market areas

Chandigarh, August 16:- Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today visited ward No. 14 i.e. sector 45 and village Burail accompanied by Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh Rana, Deputy Mayor and area councilor and all concerned officers of engineering wing, MCC.

During the visit the Commissioner directed the concerned engineers to remove broken railing from the dividing of phirni road in village burial. He asked the public health engineers to prepare the estimate of sewerage & storm water disposal system in the village and put up for approval immediately.

The Commissioner directed the concerned officers of public health wing to make the tubewell functional at the earliest. He asked them to start miner repair works in the village immediately and prepare estimates for major repair works required in the village.

He directed the engineers to remove the encroachments from the market area including ramps built by the shopkeepers in the varmdahs.

MCC impounds 15 dumped cars from Burail

Chandigarh August 16:- The Municipal Corporation today carried out a special anti encroachment drive at Burail. As per the direction of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, the enforcement team issued total 57 challans and impounded 15 dumped cars, 2 motorcycle and  one water tanker from the phirni road of village Burail.

       The MCC warned the encroachers not to dump their vehicles in public land otherwise they will face strict legal action.

122nd Orientation Course at PU

Chandigarh August 16, 2019 

Professor K.S. Arya, former Principal of DAV College, Chandigarh inaugurated the 122nd  Orientation Course organized by the UGC- Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh, here today. Professor Arya in his key note address highlighted the development of higher education in the nation.  Explaining the 
recommendations of different educational commissions and committees, he discussed the pros and cons of the draft of the new educational policy.  He elaborated that policies can only be effective if the faculty is dynamic and focuses on the primary aim of educational institutes i.e. teaching.  His words were motivating, peppered with apt quotes, anecdotes and sharing of experiences.
