STATUS, E-ASSESSMENT AND OPEN SOURCE RESOURCES FOR MOOCS DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSED IN THE WORKSHOP

Chandigarh November 9, 2019

The day six of the workshop was devoted to the status of MOOCs, e-assessment, Open source resources for MOOCs. The seven days workshop on Designing and development of MOOCs is being organised by the Centre of Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM) and Swayam Cell, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

 Prof. Jatinder Grover, CALEM Coordinator, PU, and Dr. Vishal Sharma, SWAYAM Coordinator PU introduced the theme and topics to the participants attending seven days workshop on designing and development of MOOCs.

The first academic session was devoted to the Status of MOOCs through the perspective of Statistics by Prof. Ravi K. Mahajan from Department of Statistics, USOL, P.U. Prof. Mahajan took the participants on the journey of various MOOC platforms available and the courses offered by them. The characteristics of the SLM (Self Learning Mode) and SIM
(Self Instructional Mode) were shared with the participants. He stressed on the quality of the educational content and transferring that into e-content (script/ video production/ audio content/animations). He also stressed on the quality multimedia presentations using visual and graphical presentations for engaging the learners undertaking MOOCs. He also gave the historical background of video productions/e-content for UGC Countrywide classroom, undertaken by USOL in the past.

 The second academic session was devoted to the E-assessment of MOOCs by Prof. Uma Kanjilal from IGNOU. She explained in detail the concept of xMOOC (traditional, Linear and having centralized repository) and cMOOC (Non-linear and social networked learning). Besides, that various component of MOOCs and intricacies of E-assessment of MOOCs
were also discussed. The recognition of credits marks earned through MOOCs was discussed. She also explained the modalities of transfer of credits across universities for the MOOCs.

Dr. Amit Deogar from NITTTR, Chandigarh discussed the various Open source resources (OER) for MOOCs Development. The enlightened the participants the freedom of using open source softwares and website distrowatch.com for downloading many Open source softwares. He also shared if we start using the Open source softwares we can save crores of rupees and will help our economy. He also highlighted the importance of BOSS (the operating system) developed by the CDAC.  He shared the problem of Software Piracy and concept of a Common Creative License.

Expert lecture held at UIET

Chandigarh November 9, 2019

Dr Gnansekaran N., Assistant professor, NIT Surathkal, Karnataka delivered a lecture on “Hybrid Optimization for Engineering applications” at Information Technology department of UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY CHANDIGARH on dated 07, Nov, 2019. He emphasized on the importance of Optimization methods for solving engineering problems.
Key optimization algorithms like Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization were also covered by him. He took engineering examples to teach optimization methods. Many times it is difficult to select one optimization algorithm for a particular problem, combining two methods may give better solution. Research papers were discussed by the
speaker to show that hybrid optimization is the key to find optimal solution.This lecture was organized by Mr Sukhvir Singh, Assistant Professor and Dr Krishan Kumar, Professor under the guidance of Dr Savita Gupta, Director, UIET. Almost 80 persons attended this lecture including faculty members, research scholars, master’s students and undergraduate students.

2nd day of NATIONAL MEDIATION AND NEGOTIATION COMPETITION AT UILS

Chandigarh November 9, 2019


 The final leg of the ‘2nd  Justice A. S. Anand Mediation and Negotiation Competition, 2019, organised by the
University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University took place on Saturday. The day commenced with the Semi Final rounds, in which the Top 4 teams ranked highest in the Quarter Finals confronted each other in a forty- five minute mediation session. The rounds were graced by distinguished advocates and senior mediators of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The participating teams showcased their absolute best, and gave each other a run for their money.

               The ‘Top 2’ teams qualified for the much awaited Finals and had the privilege to then compete in the presence of Honourable Justice Sudhir Mittal and Senior Advocate Atul Lakhanpal of Punjab and Haryana High Court. The proposition was based on an international dispute between the CEO’s of two leading technology companies of the world, along with their respective government authorities.The rounds were truly illustrative of the momentum that the field of arbitration
and mediation has gained in today’s time. The team from NLSUI,

Bangalore won the ‘Best Negotiating Pair’ award and the mediator from Rayat Bahara University was adjudged the ‘Best Mediator’.

               The valedictory ceremony was also marked by the launch of the book “on The Electoral System: Democracy, Laws and Issues” edited by Prof. Rattan Singh and Dr. Shruti Bedi, which was released by Justice Sudhir Mittal. The event was a great success and it helped promote the idea of mediation as an alternate remedy for dispute resolution, now and in the near future.

Researchers expatiate on Japanese Encephalitis

International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) -Asia Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) supported school on the theme
‘Blood-Brain-Barrier: From Basic Physiology to Neurological Disorders finally ended on a good note. The day started with an informative lecture from Prof. Sunit Kumar Singh, Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi. He talked about the epidemic of Japanese Encephalitis in Gorakhpur and also discussed the possible strategies that can inhibit the associated neuro-inflammatory conditions during the infection. He also highlighted the possible role of microRNAs as a treatment strategy for virus associated encephalitis.

Dr. Rajnish Kumar, faculty, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, talked about the possibility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the research area of neuroscience. AI is a branch of computer science that we are using on daily basis on our mobile phones and this technology can be used for understanding neural connections. AI is used to create models and help in understanding brain and related disorders.

The day ended with a valedictory ceremony where participants expressed their heartfelt emotions and shared their experience of their stay in “The City Beautiful.” The IBRO School 2019 ended with the felicitation of participants by Prof. Rajat Sandhir and the organizing team.

Kirron Kher formally starts two days Kirtan Samagam starts at Sector 34

Chandigarh, November 9:- Smt. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, UT, Chandigarh today formally starts the two days Kirtan Samagam at Sector 34 in presence of Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC.

The two days Mega Kirtan Samagam is being organized by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji on 9th and 10th November, 2019.

While addressing the gathering, Smt. Kher said that each section of society is spreading the eternal message Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji of peace and oneness of humanity. She appreciated the efforts of Municipal Corporation for organizing this function and said that the documentary based on the life and events of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji has been arranged beautifully to be showcased from 12 pm onward on both of the days.

The Mayor said that the MCC has arranged the documentaries based on Udaasis of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji in four separate pandals to spread the real message of peace and oneness of humanity.

Prominent Kirtan Jathas including Bhai Pradeep Singh, Granthi from Gurudwara sector 34, Chandigarh, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Ji, Hazuri Raagi, Bhai Davinder Singh Ji, Hazuri Raagi and Gyani Kishan Ji, Kathawachak from Sri Darbar Sahib, Golden Temple, Amritsar performed today.

Bhai Amrik Singh Ji, Granthi from Gurudwara sector 34, Chandigarh, Bhai Gurkirat Singh Ji, Hazuri Raagi, Gyani Harpal Singh Ji, Kathawachak and Bhai Karnail Singh, Hazuri Raagi from Sri Darbar Sahib, Golden Temple, Amritsar will perform on 10th November 2019 from 6 pm to 10 pm.

He appealed to the citizens of Chandigarh to get themselves graced with the divine Kirtan Samagam and must watch the documentary. Earlier, a Gatka programme was also performed by artists.

Other prominent persons also present during the occasion including Sh. Sanjay Tandon, president, BJP, Chandigarh, Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor & chairman, implementation committee, Smt. Ravinder Kaur Gujral, area councilor, other councilors and officers of MCC.

Jattha of devotees planted sapling at PU

Chandigarh November 8, 2019

Jattha of 20 devotees of National Integrated Forum  of artitists and activists (NIFAA) supported by Shiromani Gatka Fedration of India (SGFI) visited Panjab University today carrying soil from Shri Nankana Sahib, Pakistan and holy water (Jal) from Shri Panja Sahib, Pakistan as a part of Guru Nanak Sadbhawna Yatra to celebrate 550th Parkash (Birth) Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji. They planted trees near Shri Gurudwara Sahib Sector-14 in the presence of Prof. Karamjit Singh, Registrar, Prof. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations, Mrs Renuka B.Salwan, Director of Public Relatuions, Mr. Anil Thakur, Horticulture Division. The soil and holy water (Jal) which they were carrying was mixed while planting the saplings.

Guru Nanak Sadbhawna Yatra is being organised in four phases on the routes travelled by Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his lifetime to spread his message of peace, hormony and goodwill amongst all humans. This yatra started from the birth place of Shri GuruNanak Dev Ji in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan and travelled through Pakistan, Iraq, Afganistan, India, Nepal, Bangla Desh and Sri Lanka. On this route, NIFAA has planned to plant 55000 saplings at 100 important places throughout the routes adding the holy water (Jal) and the soil in each plant. In return, they are also collecting soil from all places of travel for putting the same in the saplings which they will plant at Kartarpur Sahib, Pakistan and Sultanpur Lodhi, India as symbol of peace and harmony.

श्री गुरू नानक देव जी के 550वें प्रकाश पर्व के मद्देनजऱ पंजाब सरकार द्वारा पवित्र नगरी सुल्तानापुर लोधी में करवाए जा रहे समागम के दौरान मुख्य पंडाल गुरू नानक दरबार में आज चौथे दिन भी प्रसिद्ध कीर्तनकारों, कथाकारों और ढाडी जत्थों ने गुरमत संगीत के द्वारा संगत को गुर इतिहास से अवगत करवाया । मुख्य पंडाल में लगातार चल रहे गुरमत संगीत के मद्देनजऱ भारी संख्या में संगत मुख्य पंडाल गुरू नानक दरबार की तरफ रूख कर रही है और जैसे- जैसे गुरू नानक देव जी के प्रकाश पर्व वाला दिन (12 नवंबर) नज़दीक आ रहा है, संगत की संख्या बढ़ती जा रही है। इस दौरान स्वास्थ व  परिवार कल्याण मंत्री पंजाब श्री बलबीर सिंह सिद्धू और खेल मंत्री पंजाब राणा गुरमीत सिंह सोढी ने भी श्रद्धालू के तौर पर मुख्य पंडाल में उपस्थिती दी।

आज लगातार चौथे दिन मुख्य पंडाल गुुरू नानक दरबार में कीर्तनी जत्थों, कथाकारों और ढाडी जत्थों ने रूहानी गुरमत संगीत के द्वारा समय बांधा । इस अवसर पर भाई हरबंस सिंह नामधारी ने कीर्तन के द्वारा संगतों को गुरू कीर्तन सुनाकर लोगों को भक्तिरस के साथ जोड़ा, तत्पश्चात भाई सविन्दर सिंह ने कीर्तन के द्वारा उपस्थिती दी। भाई दविन्दर सिंह हजूरी रागी श्री दरबार साहिब ने मुख्य पंडाल में उपस्थित संगत को गुरबाणी कीर्तन सुनाकर  शब्द गुरू के साथ जोड़ा और भाई अमरजीत सिंह ने आसा दी वार का कीर्तन किया। इसके उपरांत भाई जसपाल सिंह के जत्थे ने बाबा नानक के जीवन वृतांत को ढाडी वारों के द्वारा पेश किया और भाई हरप्रीत सिंह के जत्थे ने भी काव्य पाठ वारों के द्वारा संगतों को निहाल किया । श्री भैनी साहिब से आए बच्चों के कीर्तनी जत्थे और पंजाबी यूनिवर्सिटी पटियाला के डॉ. अलंकार सिंह ने रागबद्ध कीर्तन करके संगतों को निहाल कर दिया, जबकि कथावाचक जसविन्दर सिंह ने कथा विचार के साथ समय बाँधा। इस अवसर पर मंच संचालन करते हुए भाई जसविन्दर सिंह ने गुरू साहिब के 550वें प्रकाश पर्व को कीमती और सौभाग्यशाली बताते हुए मुख्य पंडाल में उपस्थित संगत को गुरू साहिब के किरत करो, नाम जपो, वंड छको के उपदेशों पर अमल करने का निमंत्रण दिया।

Research can be a return on investment for economic growth of India

The fifth day of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) -Asia Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) supported seminar on the theme ‘Blood-Brain-Barrier: From Basic Physiology to Neurological Disorders’ started with a lecture from Prof. A. B. Pant, CSIR-IITR, Lucknow. He highlighted the significance of ethical standards in the field of research. He also emphasized that key to research is planning, performing, reporting and monitoring of research data.

Prof. A. K. Mishra, DRDO-INMAS, New Delhi discussed the role of educational growth of the Indian students and also emphasized on the importance of bringing basic sciences to the front line in the area of research. Educating researchers about having a strong methodology and making them realize to prevent the misuse of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) will translate into development of research. Good and ethical research can be in future a return on investment for the country and promote economic growth for India.

Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, discussed about the statistical tools and techniques that can help researchers in higher reproducibility of their data. He also talked about various software and tools that can help researchers in analyzing their research data.

The session ended with a talk from Prof. Amal Chandra Mondal, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on the structure and function of blood brain barrier. He also talked about the ways molecules transport across the blood brain barrier.

The day ended with poster evaluation of the participants.

Town Vending Committee Meeting held

Chandigarh, November 8:- A meeting of Town Vending Committee was held in the office of MCC under the chairmanship of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC attended by other members of committee namely Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer, Sh. Dilbag Singh, Town Planner, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. V.N. Sharma, member TVC, Sh. Vivek Trivedi, SDO, NULM and other concerned officers of MCC.

During the meeting the following issues were discussed:

·        The registered Non-Essential Service Providers (N-ESP) street vendors, who have paid their monthly fees till September, 2019 by 30.09.2019 and cleared all their dues will be eligible for draw of lots scheduled to be held on 13&14.11.2019.

·        The concerned officials apprised to the TVC members that total 73 vendors have been issued notices of No Vending Zones from sector 1 to 14.

·        The sub committee apprised the TVC members that it has resolved all 11 complaints received till final date.

·        Town planner alongwith Architect, UT, will visit in sector 19 to increase the vending sites and explore feasibility of new sites.

·        Public notice regarding N-ESP street vendors will be issued on 10th November, 2019  as per under mentioned schedule:-

Nukad Nataks by UILS PU students

The 5th  year students of University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University,  Chandigarh performed 8 different street plays on the theme Environment spreading awareness about increasing pollution, deforestation, wastage of water and the adverse effects of the same at Sector 17 plaza Sukhna lake from  from 4th -7th  November.

 The plays titled Parivartan, Surat Badalni Chahiye, Prakriti se Panga and Trahimaam were performed at sector 17 plaza and the plays titled Vote for Vatavaran, Krishi Sangrakshan, Prakritika Darpan and Umeed were performed at Sukhna lake. The students through the medium of Nukkad Nataks encouraged the public to save our mother earth by
conserving resources and banning the use of single use plastic.

The students of UILS, Panjab University also conducted a survey on effectiveness of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was conducted in Sector 15, 24 and 37 of Chandigarh. An analysis of the collective data of the concerned area brought out that-

Around 80% (1089) of the people in the sample space knew about the Mission, and still about 75% (947) people felt the need of improvement in the policies.

About 55% (638) People in the sector feel there are enough dustbins available around, while other negate it or aren’t sure.

35% (364) of the population is not at all aware of the concept of single use plastic and is continuing to use the same.
