*Chandigarh, August 4:-* Aimed at switching from intermittent supply to 24×7 continuous full pressure water supply system, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Sh. Amit Shah today inaugurated the 24×7 Water Supply project in Manimajra, Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh and Sh. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.

Sh. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Union Home Secretary, Sh. Tapan Kumar Deka, Special Director, Intelligence Bureau, Sh. Rajeev Verma, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd., Mrs. Kirron Kher, Former Member Parliament, Chandigarh, Sh. Kuljeet Singh Sandhu, Senior Deputy Mayor, Chandigarh and other councilors, senior officers and dignitaries were also present during the inaugural function.

Addressing the citizens at the inauguration ceremony, the Home Minister praised Chandigarh for maintaining its original planned city form and acknowledged the persistent water supply challenges faced by the residents. He highlighted that the 24×7 water supply project, built at a cost of Rs. 75 crores, will greatly benefit the Manimajra area by ensuring continuous water availability with full pressure, even up to the fourth floor. He said that this project has marked a significant milestone in Chandigarh’s journey towards sustainable water management and efficient service delivery to its residents.

He further said that the project’s primary objectives are to switch from intermittent to continuous pressurized water supply, ensuring better water quality, reliability, and effective supply-demand management. This initiative aligns with the service level benchmarks set by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, including 100% water supply coverage, assured per capita supply of 155 LPCD, 100% metering, and maintaining Non-Revenue Water (NRW) levels between 15-20%.

In his address, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria said that residents of Manimajra will highly benefit from this project as the continuous supply system would provide better water quality and households will get better pressure of water sufficient to fill tanks up to forth storey, thus lowering the pumping costs.

He appreciated the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. for taking various steps to improve the basic upkeep besides ensuring the availability of civic amenities in each sector. He said that public participation is must in understanding the issues, recognizing the areas requiring improvement and evolving strategies for future planning.

Earlier, the UT Adviser Sh. Rajeev Verma welcomed the Home Minister and other distinguished Guests in the programme. Lauding the project’s features, the UT Adviser said that the 24×7 Water Supply pilot project, with a CAPEX value of INR 74.56 Crore and an OPEX value of INR 91.29 Crore for 15 years (to be borne by the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh), aims to transform the existing intermittent water supply into a continuous and pressurized system. This strategic move will enhance water supply efficiency, reduce wastage, and ensure better water resource management.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. presented vote of thanks to the Union Home Minister and other distinguished guests in the programme. She also expressed gratitude and appreciation to all those who have contributed to complete the 24×7 water supply project at Manimajra.

 She said that the project executed by Chandigarh Smart City under the Smart City Mission, the project aims to conserve potable water, minimize wastage, and provide uninterrupted, pressurized water supply to the residents of Manimajra. Key features of the project include:

– Installation of 11,727 smart water meters with advanced metering infrastructure, enabling real-time monitoring and analysis of water consumption and leakages.

– Completion of the 22 km water supply network, with joint testing and diversion/connection of tube wells to underground reservoirs (UGRs).

– Construction, testing, and installation of equipment/machinery for the Underground Reservoir (UGR) and the Water Works III building, with furnishing works.

– Implementation of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and instrumentation across the water supply infrastructure.

The National Science Scheme (NSS)  hosted its  event con the Union Budget 2024-2025 for the youth under the able guidance of Dr.Parveen Goyal, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Dr.Sonia Sharma and Dr.Vandita kakkar programme officer, NSS to engage and educate the youth about the implications of national policies on scientific and educational advancements. The event took place on August 2,2024 and featured an array of informative discussions and activities from 48 participants.

Dr. Tilak Raj and Dr. Nitin Arora, distinguished science judges, provided valuable insights into the union budget, emphasizing its impact on the scientific community and youth development.

Chief Guest of the event, was presided over by Prof. Latika Sharma, Dean of Alumni Relations, and Guest of Honour Prof. SK Tripathi, Chairman of the Physics Department.

IGNOU extends Fresh Admission & Re-Registration up to 14th August, 2024

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for online admission to all Masters, Bachelors, PG Diploma, Diploma and Certificate programmes and online Re-registration of all Masters and Bachelors for the session July, 2024 session till 14th August, 2024. Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh, Senior Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Center Chandigarh informed that interested applicants can apply through online link for admission to any Masters, Bachelors, PG Diploma, Diploma and Certificate programmes of their choice: https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/ which is available on IGNOU website www.ignou.ac.in.

SC/ST students will be admitted without charging any fee in some of the Diploma/PG Diploma & Graduate Programmes and they will have to apply online and to upload all necessary documents for fee exemption. हिंदी-विभाग, पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय, चंडीगढ़ की इस अनूठी पहल की सराहना सम्पूर्ण भारत में हो रही है जहाँप्रत्येक माह किसी न किसी साहित्यकार की जयंती के उपलक्ष्य में व्याख्यानों का आयोजन किया जाता है| जिनका उद्देश्य साहित्यकारों की रचनाओं से जोड़ना तो है ही साथ ही उनके बहुमुखी व्यक्तित्व और जीवन संघर्ष को करीब से जानने का अवसर भी देना है|इसी कड़ी में विभाग द्वारा प्रतिवर्ष 31 जुलाई को ‘प्रेमचंद जयंती समारोह’ का आयोजन किया जाता है| इस वर्ष भी 31 जुलाई,2024 को विभाग द्वारा विभाग के स्मार्ट क्लास रूम में प्रेमचंद जयंती के उपलक्ष्य मेंविशेष कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया गया| इस अवसर पर मुख्यवक्ता के रूप में प्रो. सुभाष चन्द्र (प्रोफेसेर, हिन्दी विभाग, कुरुक्षेत्र विश्वविद्यालय, कुरुक्षेत्र) शामिल हुए|कार्यक्रम का शुभारंभ विभागाध्यक्ष डॉ० अशोक कुमार सभ्रवाल ने सभी उपस्थित जन का स्वागत करते हुए मुख्यवक्ता एवं अतिथियों को पुष्पगुच्छ भेंट कर किया| इसके बाद विभाग के एम. ए. द्वितीय के विद्यार्थी अभिषेक पाण्डेय ने ‘प्रेमचंद : व्यक्तित्व और कृतित्व’ विषय पर अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किये| इसके बाद एम. ए. द्वितीय के विद्यार्थी नारायण सिंह ने अपनी कविता के माध्यम से प्रेमचंद को याद किया, तत्पश्चात शोधार्थी रेखा मौर्या ने प्रेमचंद की वर्तमान प्रासंगिकता पर अपना  वक्तव्य दिया। मुख्य वक्ता के रूप में उपस्थित डॉ. सुभाष चन्द्र ने अपने वक्तव्य में प्रेमचंद द्वारा सामाजिक बदलाव की बड़ी भूमिकाओं से परिचय कराया| उन्होंने कार्यक्रम के मूल विषय ‘प्रेमचंद और वर्तमान समय’ को सारगर्भित रूप से व्याख्यायित किया । उन्हें हिंदी साहित्य का गाँधीवादी व्यक्तित्व बतलाते हुए उनके उपन्यास और कहानियों के लक्ष्यों पर लंबी चर्चा कीऔर कहा कि प्रेमचंद का साहित्य समन्वय की बड़ी कोशिश है| कार्यक्रम के अंत में प्रेमचंद चेयर के पूर्व अध्यक्ष प्रो. नीरजा सूद और वर्तमान अध्यक्ष प्रो. बैजनाथ प्रसाद को विभाग द्वारा सम्मानित किया गया।  अंत में विभागाध्यक्ष द्वारा धन्यवाद ज्ञापन कर आए मुख्य अतिथि को सम्मानित कर कार्यक्रम का समापन किया गया। कार्यक्रम में प्रो. गुरमीत सिंह  (हिन्दी विभाग ), पंकज श्रीवास्तव (दर्शन शास्त्र), कुलविंदर  सिंह  (यू. बी. एस.), प्रो. नीरू,  डॉ. हरमेल सिंह  (सी. डी. ओ. ई.), डॉ. सुधीर मेहरा (अंग्रेजी विभाग) तथा प्रो. नरेश कुमार (एसोसिएट डी.एस.डब्ल्यू. ) ने कार्यक्रम में शिरकत की। इस कार्यक्रम का संचालन एम. ए.  द्वितीय के विद्यार्थी पवन कुमार ने किया।

*Chandigarh, July 31:-* In an effort to enhance Chandigarh’s cleanliness and promote a healthier community, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh conducted a capacity-building and training workshop for Sanitary Inspectors and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative, part of the ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ program, aligns with the ‘Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao’ campaign.

The workshop aimed to refresh the training of Sanitary Inspectors and SHGs, focusing on the importance of waste segregation, home composting, and eco-friendly practices to promote a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) lifestyle.

As part of this awareness campaign, Sanitary Inspectors and SHGs will engage with citizens across the city, educating them on proper waste management, home composting, and adopting eco-friendly choices to support an RRR lifestyle.

MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, highlighted that this initiative seeks to build on the progress made in waste segregation and management. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage effective waste segregation and the adoption of eco-friendly options in daily life.

Experts trained the SHGs on proper waste segregation, home composting, avoiding banned single-use plastics, and adopting a zero-waste lifestyle.

The Commissioner said that the MCC’s unwavering commitment to progressive development, which has been recognized nationally. The contributions of each officer and staff member have led to significant progress in solid waste management, including achieving 100% collection of segregated waste from households and commercial areas.

She also mentioned that with the cooperation of citizens, Chandigarh has improved its Swachh Survekshan ranking from 66th in 2021 to 11th in 2023. The city was honored with the ‘Safaimitra Surakshit’ title by Her Excellency, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu.

She also highlighted the city’s achievements in waste management, including a state-of-the-art composting plant in Dadumajra with a capacity of 300 TPD. The plant has produced 163.06 MT of compost from segregated wet waste in just four months (up to July 22, 2024). This compost will be used in all 1,800 parks and gardens across the city and will be available to farmers for agricultural use.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of combining efforts and sharing achievements to continue the journey toward the ‘Garbage-Free City’ mission. The platform encourages the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and innovative ideas to propel the city toward even greater heights.

She appealed to all citizens to segregate their waste and hand it over to the Municipal Garbage Collector. By adopting RRR practices like home composting and choosing eco-friendly options, citizens can contribute to the ‘Garbage-Free City’ mission.

The aim was to engage the community, foster a sense of responsibility, and contribute to the overall cleanliness and sustainability of Chandigarh by maintaining the city’s cleanliness and working towards making it a plastic-free city.

The MCC team, in the presence of Deputy Mayor and area Councillor Sh. Rajinder Sharma, focused on educating the residents about the importance of waste segregation and the need to curb the use of single-use plastic bags. Alternatives to plastic bags, such as reusable cloth or jute bags, were also discussed to encourage environmentally conscious choices.

Tree Plantation Drive marks the celebrations of ‘Vanmahotsav’ at BH-3 & BH-2, PU

The residents and staff of Boys Hostel No. 3 and 2, Panjab University, Chandigarh today on 22nd July, 2024, in collaboration with Horticulture Department, celebrated ‘Vanmahotsav’ by planting tree saplings at different blocks of the hostels. Prof. Kewal Krishan, Dean International Students, Prof. Amit Chauhan, Dean Students Welfare and Prof. Emanual Nahar, Former DSW, Panjab University launched the tree plantation drive.Prof. Amit Chauhan, PU DSW applauded the initiative ofboth the hostels and stressed on the need of environmental sustainability by planting more trees. Dr. Sucha Singh, Warden, BH-3 and Dr. Tilak Raj, Warden (BH-2) jointly organized the tree plantation drive under the VanmahotsavProgramme of the PU Horticulture Department. Panjab University, Chandigarh ranked 10th Best University in India

The U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in rankings and consumer advice, has ranked Panjab University as the 10th Best educational institution in India and 737 globally for 2024-25. PU has been ranked 213 among Universities in Asia.  A total of 2172 educational institutions were ranked on 13 parameters, including research indices, academic programmes, facilities, academic peer perception, high impact publications and citations based on the data of web of Science for 5 year period of 2018-2022. This is a marked improvement over its rank in 2022-23 wherein it was ranked 759 globally out of 2000 universities.

PU has also performed well in many of the disciplines.

Earlier, in June, 2024, The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) had ranked Panjab University, Chandigarh, among the top 4% of higher education institutions globally for the year 2023-24 in the survey of 21,000 institutions, representing the largest academic ranking of global universities.CWUR survey had also ranked PU as 10th  Best Institution in India and 242 in India. Globally, it has been ranked 527 in quality of education imparted and a research rank of 794, with an overall score of 71.6. These rankings were based on four parameters: education, employability, faculty, and research, with equal emphasis on student-related and faculty-related indicators.

Panjab University, Chandigarh, has also achieved the 10th rank in India among government universities in the recent survey by Education World (EW), India(2024), with a score of 1125. The rankings are based on ten parameters of higher education excellence, including faculty competence, faculty welfare and development, research and innovation, curriculum and pedagogy,industry interface, placements, infrastructure, internationalism, leadership/governance, and the range and diversity of study programs offered. Panjab University scored 284 out of 300 in research and innovation, demonstrating the university’s strong credentials in this domain.

There has been a tremendous improvement in rankings of PU in recent past, having  achieved the highest rankings A++ in NAAC accreditation and grant of Category I status by UGC as well as improved rankings in QS and THE World Rankings.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig has congratulated the  faculty, students, and staff for their pivotal contributions in bringing PU on the path of revitalisation.

She attributed these improvements to the dedication and sincerity of the various stakeholders, which is helping PU realise its true potential. She shared that the University is operating strategically, developing an Institutional Development Plan (IDP) which is in sync with its commitment to contribute significantly towards Viksit Bharat by 2047. It has also restructured many of its courses as per the emerging employment scenario and aligning them with the NEP-2020.
