*Chandigarh, June 18:-* A “Plastic Mukt Chandigarh” campaign was organized today by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh in collaboration with NGO “I HATE POLYTHENE” and the Market Welfare Associations of Sector 31-C and Sector 15.

The main aim of the campaign was to make people aware of the harmful effects of using polythene bags. 

Shoppers and shopkeepers were encouraged to stop using plastic and switch to compostable (eco-friendly) bags for the safety of the environment.

During the campaign, MC Joint Commissioner Sh. Himanshu Gupta, NGO members, and market representatives spoke to the public, shared information, and motivated everyone to make better choices for the environment.

An oath was also taken by all present – including shopkeepers, customers, and officials – promising not to use plastic bags in the future.

This campaign is a part of MCC’s ongoing efforts to make Chandigarh a clean, green, and plastic-free city. Similar drives will be held in other parts of the city soon.

*Chandigarh, June 17:-* In anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season, the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS has constituted 18 special flood control teams and operationalized 7 flood/water-logging control rooms across the city.

These arrangements will be in force from June 20 to September 30, 2025, to ensure swift response and redressal of water-logging and rain-related emergencies.

Each control room will function 24×7 with designated teams working in three shifts. Citizens can lodge complaints regarding water-logging through the dedicated control room phone numbers.

Each control room has dedicated field teams including Field Managers (FM), Multi-Task Workers (MTW), and Public Health officials. The Public Health Officer will serve as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) in each control room, coordinating across departments.

Special Measures and Department Roles:

• 18 emergency response teams comprising officials from Public Health, B&R, Horticulture, MOH, Electrical, and Fire Department have been stationed in key sectors of the city.

• 5 water tankers with drivers will be available round-the-clock.

• Fire department personnel trained in disaster management will be stationed strategically for emergency handling.

• Barricading at collapse sites will be handled by the B&R wing.

• No casual or earned leave will be granted to staff during the monsoon period.

• All departments have been instructed to ensure immediate emergency response and provide necessary manpower from their current strength.

• Two enforcement vehicles will be provided at each control room for mobility.

The Municipal Corporation urges citizens to cooperate during monsoons and report water-logging issues promptly using the dedicated numbers for swift redressal.

*Chandigarh, June 17:-* In a continued effort to maintain public spaces and ensure unhindered access to common areas for all citizens, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today removed unauthorized fencing and encroachment near House No. 193 in Sector 27A.

Acting on the directions of Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, the engineering team of MCC carried out the operation using JCB machines to dismantle the illegal fencing along the roadside. The encroachment was obstructing public access and posed a hindrance to maintenance and movement, especially during emergency or monsoon-related operations.

*Chandigarh, June 14:-* In a step towards enhancing citizen participation and ensuring responsive governance, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has upgraded its WhatsApp based complaint system with an integrated feedback mechanism. This platform aims to streamline redressal of sanitation-related complaints, particularly those related to open dumping of waste in public spaces.

Sharing the development, Municipal Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, said, “The WhatsApp complaint number 9915762917 has been instrumental in connecting with citizens directly and addressing their concerns swiftly. With the addition of a feedback mechanism, the MCC is further strengthening transparency and accountability in service delivery.”

The Commissioner further said that citizens can also send complaints regarding usage of plastic carry bags and other banned plastic items in the city, through which the MCC can tap the violators through citizens also and move forward with the commitment of making plastic mukt Chandigarh.

He said the WhatsApp number has received a total of 271 complaints so far. Of these, 222 complaints have been successfully resolved, while 10 remain in process. Notably, the MCC has also started collecting feedback to evaluate public satisfaction. A total of 17 feedback responses have been received so far—all positive—indicating high public approval of the response system.

The Commissioner emphasized that citizen engagement is key to maintaining cleanliness and civic discipline in the city. “This initiative empowers residents to be active stakeholders in urban management. He encouraged more citizens to come forward, report violations, and share their experiences with MCC.

*Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla Announces Fast-Tracking of Dump 3 Clearance*

City Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla today announced remarkable progress in Chandigarh’s mission to eliminate legacy waste. 

She informed that Dump 1 and Dump 2 have already been fully cleared, marking a major milestone in the city’s waste management efforts.

Providing details, the Mayor stated that Dump 1, which had 5 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste, was cleared at a rate of 12,820 MT per month  within the target of 39 months.

Similarly, Dump 2, comprising 8 lakh MT, was cleared  in 26 months processed at 30770 MT per month 

Speaking about Dump 3, Mayor Babla highlighted the challenges faced when she took office, with waste being processed at a slow pace of just 9,000 MT per month. She stated:

“To expedite the clearing of Dump 3, I arranged ₹12 crore from the Chandigarh Administration. I also brought in two agencies, increasing the processing speed to 50,000 MT per month.”

Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla reaffirmed her unwavering commitment:

“I am fully committed to ensuring that Dump 3 is cleared within my tenure. I am personally monitoring the progress with regular inspections from the Municipal Office. I assure the residents of Chandigarh that no new waste dumps will be created in the future.”

Continental Institute for International Studies (CIIS) has signed a landmark academic agreement with Canada’s Seneca Polytechnic to offer globally recognised diploma programs to Indian students. Announced at a formal ceremony attended by educationists, defence veterans and civil service officers, the collaboration will allow students to complete their first year at CIIS, Sector 31, Chandigarh, before transferring to Seneca’s Toronto campus for the remaining two years.

*MC Chandigarh restart of Animal Birth Control (ABC) Program for Stray Dogs in Chandigarh*

*Chandigarh, June 10:-* The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has resumed the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Program for the sterilization of stray dogs with immediate effect at the ABC Centre, Raipur Kalan, Chandigarh.

Speaking about the development, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, stated that the program had been temporarily put on hold since 25th February this year due to administrative reasons. The program will now be carried out directly by the Municipal Corporation, ensuring a more efficient, humane, and systematic control of the stray dog population in the city.

He said that the ABC Program is a crucial step toward managing the stray dog population in a scientific and compassionate manner. The Commissioner emphasized that all sterilization procedures will be conducted strictly in accordance with the Animal Birth Control Rules and animal welfare guidelines, ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and the community.

*Chandigarh, June 7:-* Taking serious note of the increasing encroachments in market areas across the city, Municipal Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, has directed Joint Commissioner Sh. Sumeet Sihag to personally conduct surprise inspections to check unauthorized activities and restore public order.

Acting on these instructions, Joint Commissioner Sh. Sumeet Sihag conducted a surprise inspection this evening at Sector 15 Patel Market and the nearby vendors’ site. During the drive, numerous illegal vendors were found occupying public pathways and market space, causing obstruction to pedestrian movement and inconvenience to both shoppers and shopkeepers.

As a result of the inspection, total 52 challans were issued on the spot to violators for illegal encroachments. The Joint Commissioner also instructed the enforcement staff and area supervisors to maintain strict vigilance and ensure that such violations do not reoccur.

 While briefing about the features of the green belt, Mrs. Taruna Mehta siad that a 1,250-meter-long cement concrete walking and jogging track, constructed under the Ward Development Fund, promotes health and wellness among residents. A modern public toilet block has also been added, ensuring hygiene and convenience for daily visitors.

She further said additionally, the Mayor Development Fund supported the construction of toewalls beneath existing M.S. flat railings in various parts of the park, enhancing safety and visual appeal.

She said to further encourage evening use, the entire area is now well-lit with 55 energy-efficient lights. A dedicated outdoor gym zone, equipped with 8 fitness units, has been installed to promote physical activity among all age groups.
