diabetics, hypertensive, chronic disease patients more vulnerable to Corona virus attack
Even healthy can be infected from Corona
COVID-19 pandemic can affect any healthy individual, studies say those with a history of chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease etc.
Dr Sumit Jain, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Paras Hospital, Panchkula stated that patients on immunosuppressive drugs are in a “high-risk” category for developing the infection and develop moderate to severe symptoms.
Punjab, having one of the highest number of diabetes and hypertensive patients, has more fatality due to Corona than states like Karnataka which have almost same number of cases as Punjab. Also since India is capital of diabetes after China, we are at higher risk.
He added that people with high blood sugar levels have impaired natural defences meant to protect the body against several infections and promote healing. Because of their weakened immune system, people with diabetes are more likely to develop infections and chronic risks than the healthy ones. Also they are more prone to experience risky outcomes, infections, longer hospitalization and have prolonged recovery time.
The immune system of diabetic patient is already compromised, which makes it easier for viruses to thrive in the body amidst high blood glucose levels. The risk exists for people suffering from both Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes.
What should you do?
-Practice good hygiene, quarantine and social distancing
-Avoid mass gatherings and crowded places
-Check blood sugar levels regularly
-Pay attention to any changes in their bodies that could signal an infection
-Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and prevent dehydration.
-Take care of and avoid minor cuts and bleeds
-Foot hygiene, along with hand hygiene should not be ignored at this vulnerable time
-Do not miss out on any of your medicines or prescriptions
-Stock up on medicines for up to a month.
To keep your immunity level strong-
Sleep well,
Exercise well (even if at home)
Eat right,
No to lifestyle modifications
