46 PU Faculty shines among “TOP 2% SCIENTISTS OF THE WORLD”

It is indeed a proud moment for Panjab University that as many as 46 faculty members have made to the coveted list of Top 2% Scientists of the World released on 16th September 2024.

The subject-wise bibliometric analysis was conducted by a team of scientists from a top-ranking university in the world, Stanford University and the Elsevier BV-A leading scientific publisher. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. Career-long data are updated to end-of-2023 and single recent year data pertain to citations received during calendar year 2023.The selection is based on the top 1,00,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field. *Chandigarh, September 18:-*  Aiming to create a cleaner and healthier environment while promoting the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR), the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign, themed “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata,” under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Today, City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar launched a cleanliness drive at Dadumajra alongside residents. A Swachhata pledge was also held at the Sector 22 Market, encouraging collective action among citizens in the presence of the Mayor, Sh. Damanpreet Singh, area councillor and SBM Chandigarh Brand Ambassador Sh. Praveen Duggal among others.

Together, the councillors alongwith city residents conducted cleanliness drives in their respective wards in residential areas across the city, collaborating with Safaimitras to encourage everyone to maintain clean surroundings and instill these values into their Swabhav and Sanskaar.

The Mayor emphasized that this campaign is not just an initiative; it is a movement that requires the active participation of everyone. “Cleanliness is not merely the absence of dirt; it is a way of life, a shared responsibility that we must embrace collectively,” he stated.

MC Commissioner Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS, said that the deep cleaning drives citywide, including in residential areas, commercial spaces, schools, parks, government offices, gaushalas, backlanes, community centers, public conveniences, water bodies, religious places, and open lands, will continue until 2 October. The Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign marks the 10th anniversary of this initiative, which has been observed annually since its inception in 2014 to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The campaign focuses on three key pillars:

1. Swachhata Ki Bhagidaari (Public Participation, Awareness, and Advocacy)  

2. Sampoorna Swachhata(Comprehensive Cleanliness Initiatives)  

3. Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs(Preventive Health Checkups and Social Security Coverage)  

He further stated that a series of Jan Andolans (people’s movements), along with major events and activities, have been planned in alignment with these pillars. The collaboration involves stakeholders including Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), NGOs, schools, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The focus will be on schools, residential associations, market vendors, the welfare of Safaimitras, and SHGs, ensuring that all stakeholders actively contribute to maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

Additionally, NHPC Limited Regional Office, Chandigarh, organized a poster-making competition today at Maharishi Dayanand Public School, MDAV Bhawan, Daria, Chandigarh. Over 100 students created meaningful posters on cleanliness and sanitation. Through their artwork, students emphasized the significance of cleanliness, advocated for eco-friendly practices, and promoted a zero-waste lifestyle. Swachhata Champions also highlighted the importance of waste segregation and minimizing the use of single-use plastics.

The campaign will feature large-scale cleanliness drives, innovative initiatives, and community engagement activities, promoting the message of “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata.” This initiative aims to instill cleanliness as a habit and a core value while embracing the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR).

Engineers Day celebration at PU

To celebrate Engineers Day, Dr. S.S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (Dr.SSBUICET), Panjab University Chandigarh, invited Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Director CSIO-CSIR Chandigarh delivered a lecture on Biosensors and Microfluidics.

Prof. Bhattacharya emphasized the significant role of Biosensors and Microfluidics in modern science and technology. He spoke about his journey as an engineer and his work on biosensors and microfluidics and highlighting their role in the world. He also highlighted their applications in healthcare, diagnostics, and environmental monitoring, showcasing their potential to revolutionize industries globally. He discussed recent advancements in the field, particularly in the development of portable and efficient diagnostic tools. These innovations are paving the way for more accessible healthcare solutions and precise real-time monitoring across various sectors.

Prof. Rumina Sethi, Dean of University Instruction presided over the celebrations and stressed the need to keep the artistic spirit in every Engineer intact. She highlighted that engineering, while rooted in technical knowledge and problem-solving, also requires creativity and innovation, which are often fuelled by an artistic perspective. By fostering this artistic sensibility, engineers can approach challenges with a broader vision, integrating design, aesthetics, and human-centric solutions into their work.

Prof. Anupama Sharma, Chairperson, Dr. SSBUICET welcomed the guests and elaborated about the importance of Engineer’s day in today’s struggle for sustainability. Prof. Gaurav Verma, Coordinator for the event presented a vote of thanks. The event was supported by IIChE-CRC, SPSTI, Chandigarh Academies, INYAS, UT DST, IIC and CRIKC. The event was attended by students and faculty of UICET and 5 students from Yokohama National University, Japan who are visiting Panjab University under SXIP exchange program.

*Chandigarh, September 17:-* Aiming to create a cleaner and healthier environment and promote RRR principles by engaging citizens across the city in various cleanliness drives and activities, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh launched the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign themed “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata” under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar officially launches the campaign at Rose Garden, Sector 16 here today in the presence of Sh. Rajeev Verma, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh.

The event was attended by Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, Secretary Local Government, Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS, MC Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, Sh. Saurabh Joshi, area Councillor, Sh. Anup Gupta, former Mayor, other MC Councilors, Sh. Praveen Duggal and MX Kajal Mangalmukhi, SBM Brand Ambassadors along with other senior officers of MCC.

The state launch showcased remarkable teamwork with the formation of a human chain of 2,000 sanitation workers, spreading the message of cleanliness through Chandigarh’s Swachhata Mascot, Swachhman. This emphasized the importance of waste segregation and symbolized the essence of cleanliness through “Swachhata Kay Chaar Rang.”

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the MCC organized the launch using eco-friendly “Zero Waste” practices, marking a significant step toward a greener future. The event featured floral decorations, minimal eco-friendly branding, cloth tenting, glassware cutlery, and sustainable souvenirs.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar stated at the launch, “As we embark on the significant initiative—Swachhata Hi Seva, a jan andolan that embodies our commitment to cleanliness and hygiene. From September 17th to October 2nd, we will celebrate Swachhata in Swabhav and Sanskaar, marking our homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, through Swachhanjali.”

He further added, “Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘Sanitation is more important than independence.’ His vision for a clean India resonates with us today more than ever. As we honor his legacy, let us reflect on the dual ethos of Swabhav Swachhata—the inherent cleanliness we must cultivate within ourselves—and Sanskaar Swachhata—the values and traditions that promote cleanliness in our communities.”

Earlier, Commissioner Sh. Vinay Pratap, IAS said during the launch, the Municipal Corporation successfully formed its third human chain in three consecutive years under the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign, delivering an impactful message on sanitation and showcasing the power of unity and teamwork.

He emphasized that this campaign is not just an initiative; it is a movement that requires the active participation of each and every one of you. Cleanliness is not merely the absence of dirt; it is a way of life, a shared responsibility that we must embrace collectively.

Training Programme on My Bharat Portal organized at PU

NSS, Panjab University organized a training Programme on My Bharat Portal to register the NSS Volunteers of 2024-2025.  The Programme was organized by Dr. Parveen Goyal, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Training was provided by Dr. Sonia Sharma, PO, NSS, and Master Trainer of My Bharat Portal.

The Chief Guest of the event was Smt. Rupinder Kaur, Assistant Director Youth Services, Punjab cum SNO, Punjab. She addressed the Volunteers and told them the importance of NSS, She even appraised them about the NSS State and National awards. 149 Volunteers participated and registered themselves at the My Bharat Portal.


Dr. Vandita, Dr. Sarvnarinder, Dr. Anupam, and Dr Sonia Bhardwaj graced the event with their presence.

PU VC inaugurated Alumni Conference Hall and a Skill Development Centre

Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh     inaugurated an Alumni Conference Hall and a Skill Development Centre under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyaan (RUSA) grant at the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh today. While addressing the audience, Prof. Vig emphasized the importance of alumni base as back-force and called upon to associate the Alumni as ‘Professor of Practice’ and ‘Adjunct Faculty’ in the University departments so as to make the students learning more skillful.

Also, PU VC inaugurated the Skill Development Centre in the areas of the Fish Keeping and Apiculture made from the funds received from RUSA to benefit the skilled graduates as per the mandate of NEP-2020.

Dean Alumni Relations Prof. Latika Sharma appreciated the generous donations from alumni of Zoology department in creating a modern facility.

Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma and RUSA Coordinator, Prof. Rajeev K Puri congratulated and praised the efforts of Chairperson Prof. Y.K. Rawal, Faculty, and Alumni of the Department of Zoology, P.U., Chandigarh for creating this high-tech Alumni Conference Hall equipped with video conferencing facility.

During the event, Prof. Rawal expressed his gratitude to the alumni for their unwavering support to the department for the completion of this venture. Prof. Rawal apprised the guests that all wood-work in the hall was crafted from the old unused furniture and the state of art modern multimedia amenities, furniture has been created from the kind donations of the alumni.

Prof. Sukhbir Kaur, Fellow, P.U., Dean Student Welfare Prof Simrit Kahlon, Associate DSW, Prof Naresh Kumar, Prof. Jayanti Dutta, Director HRDC, and faculty from other departments also attended the event and admired the efforts of its alumni and the department.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Alumni Conference Hall was funded by the cumulative efforts of the alumni of the Department of Zoology. The inaugural programme was held in hybrid mode and various alumnus of the department joined the programme in both offline and online mode.

The Alumni coordinator Dr. Mani Chopra and Treasurer Dr. Vijay Kumar welcomed and thanked the dignitaries and guests for gracing the event.

*Mayor dedicates renovated Community Centre at Dadumajra to public*

*Chandigarh, September 16:-* Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh today inaugurated renovated Community Centre in Dadumajra colony, here in the presence senior officers of MC Chandigarh and prominent persons of the area.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that this Community Centre has undergone extensive renovations to enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal at a total expenditure of Rs. 43 lacs.

He said that the comprehensive renovation has addressed these issues, including new false ceiling, upgrading the windows and doors with toughened glass, wall tiling & curtains, acrylic painting, boundary wall railing, renovation of toilet blocks, wiring alongwith other electrical works and plastering work around boundary wall. A new open kitchen has been constructed, allowing it to be used without disturbing ongoing events. All doors have been aesthetically enhanced with teak wood, and the entire building has been made handicapped-friendly, ensuring accessibility for all, added the Mayor.

The Mayor said that the additional upgrades include covering the bathroom walls with ceramic tiles, adding a 3-foot vertical granite cladding to the corridor walls and repainting the entire building. Various repair works have also been completed to done the facility to optimal condition.

PARA LEGAL VOLUNTEER TRAINING SESSION

In a proactive move towards promoting awareness about Para Legal Volunteering amongst the students, Legal Aid Society, UILS, conducted an informative session in collaboration with the State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority. The session was graced by Mr. Surender Kumar, Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority and Mr. Sunil Kumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.

The session laid emphasis on the evolution of legal aid, its awareness, importance, the eligibility of people who can receive free legal is and the kind of legal services that are to be dispersed. Emphasis on acts like Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 and Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 as well as on ADR Mechanisms like mediation, Lok Adalat was laid to highlight their importance in the sphere of Para Legal Volunteer Awareness. The session laid emphasis on the evolution of legal aid, its awareness, importance, the eligibility of people who can receive free legal ais and the kind of legal services that are to be dispersed. Instilling sustainable values in our students is crucial: PU VC

Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd. launched ‘Bottle for Change’ initiative at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Prof. (Dr.) Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “Instilling sustainable values in our students is crucial, as they are the future leaders who will shape our world. Panjab University is committed to playing a pivotal role in this environmental movement, ensuring that our campus serves as a model of sustainability.”

Key highlights of the event included the MoU signing for establishing on-campus Material Recovery Facility, the launch of the ‘Bench of Dreams’ made from used plastics, and the installation of used plastic collection banks at strategical places of the university to encourage responsible disposal and recycling. An agreement with Esperanza, the recycling partner for Chandigarh and Punjab, was also finalized to ensure collection of used plastic and sending for recycling. The event further marked the flag-off of a vehicle dedicated to regular plastic waste collection within the university & city. Bisleri International also recognized campus partners like Horticulture Department, Enactus, NSS, and Rotaract for their invaluable support of the ‘Bottles for Change’ initiative.

This landmark event, which marks the culmination of a collaborative effort that began in September 2023, includes the signing of an MoU today to develop a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on campus – a significant step towards sustainability. The event attracted over 300 enthusiastic students who came together to support sustainable practices and recycling efforts on campus.

The event was honored by the presence of Prof. Y.P. Verma, Registrar PU and Angelo George, CEO of Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd.
