This special initiative, held under the banner of ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwara’, celebrated both tradition and sustainability.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from the community and was graced by key dignitaries including City Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla, MC Special Commissioner Sh. The dignitaries performed the sacred ‘Kanjak Pooja’, honouring 108 young girls as ‘Little Champions of Cleanliness’ for symbolizing purity and the power of change.

Over two hundred girls were served traditional prasad as part of the Kanya Pooja ritual — all conducted while maintaining zero-waste standards. Food was served using steel and biodegradable paper plates procured through a women’s self-help group, underlining the importance of both sustainability and women’s empowerment.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor remarked,

“This initiative not only honors our rich cultural traditions but also teaches the importance of cleanliness and sustainability to our children. Small changes—like waste segregation and adopting zero-waste practices—can pave the way for a greener city and help us perform better in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan.”

Special Commissioner Sh. Pardeep Kumar, IAS, added,

“The success of the Swachh Kanjak Pooja reflects MCC’s unwavering commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener, and more responsible society. Events like these inspire communities to adopt eco-conscious practices.”

The event featured sustainable arrangements such as cloth tents, steel utensils sourced from Bartan Bhandar, a women’s self-help group under the DAY-NULM initiative, and twin bins for waste segregation to ensure minimal environmental footprint.

The women’s self-help group not only supplied the eco-friendly materials but also prepared the food for the event, showcasing the vital role of community participation in driving impactful civic initiatives.

By seamlessly blending culture, cleanliness, and community, the Swachh Kanjak Pooja stands as a powerful example of how traditional festivities can be reimagined to promote environmental awareness and social responsibility among the younger generation.

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Signs MoU with Panchkula MC Under Swachh Shehar Jodi Initiative*

*100-Day Urban Waste Management Mentorship Program Kicks Off*

For Detailed

*Chandigarh, September 27:-* In a significant step towards strengthening inter-city collaboration and promoting best practices in urban sanitation, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipal Corporation Panchkula under the Swachh Shehar Jodi (SSJ) initiative of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U).

The MoU signing ceremony took place at the office of MC Chandigarh in the presence of Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla, Mayor of Chandigarh and Sh. Kulbhushan Goyal, Mayor of Panchkula. Also present were Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh and Sh. R.K. Singh, Commissioner, MC Panchkula, along with senior officials from both corporations.

Speaking on the occasion, Chandigarh Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla highlighted that the MoU aligns with the vision of knowledge sharing, peer learning, and replication of successful sanitation models across cities. She emphasized that based on recent Swachh Survekshan rankings, cities have been categorized as mentor and mentee cities. Chandigarh, being a top performer, has been designated as a mentor city, while Panchkula, selected for its potential to grow, has been designated as a mentee city.

The SSJ initiative was launched earlier today by Hon’ble Union Minister Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar through a national virtual event, marking the beginning of this collaborative journey involving 72 mentor cities and around 200 mentee cities across the country.

Mayor Babla stated that the SSJ initiative is one of the largest structured mentorship frameworks in the urban waste management sector. It aims to leverage the strengths of high-performing cities and extend support to others through experience sharing, on-ground mentorship, and policy-driven collaboration.

She further noted that Chandigarh’s consistent performance in Swachh Survekshan—the world’s largest urban sanitation survey—has placed it in the Super Swachh League, which includes cities ranked 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the years 2022, 2023, and 2024 across five population categories. These cities have demonstrated exemplary performance, citizen participation, and governance, becoming role models for others.

MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, reiterated that the SSJ initiative provides a dynamic platform for knowledge transfer and strategic mentorship.

Mentor cities, including those in the Super Swachh League, have been paired with geographically proximate low-performing cities to ensure effective mentoring and handholding. Panchkula has been selected based on recent rankings and its readiness to adopt and scale best practices.

He further explained that the MoU marks the launch of a 100-day mentorship program, during which each mentor–mentee pair will co-create detailed action plans with measurable milestones. The focus will be on replicable models, hands-on support, and capacity building. The outcomes of this initiative will also contribute significantly to the performance evaluation in Swachh Survekshan 2026.

The Commissioner added that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) will provide strategic and policy-level support throughout the mentorship period. The goal is clear—each mentee city should demonstrate visible improvement in swachhata outcomes through structured learning and sustained implementation.

This MoU not only formalizes a strong institutional partnership between Chandigarh and Panchkula but also sets the tone for a transformative urban journey driven by collaboration, innovation, and community-centric development.

*Swachhata is Our Adornment, Culture and Dharma- MoHUA Shri Manohar Lal Khattar*

*Swachhata Hi Seva-Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath Shramdaan Campaign Organized in Chandigarh*

*Collective pledge for cleanliness in Chandigarh on Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Jayanti*

For Detailed

Chandigarh: September 25, 2025: The Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, today launched the Swachhata Hi Seva – Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath Shramdaan campaign in Sector 22 Market, Chandigarh. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from officials, citizens, MWA, volunteers including Civil Defence and Safai Mitras, reaffirming the collective commitment towards the vision of a clean India. A massive Shramdaan activity was undertaken, where participants wholeheartedly joined hands to clean the surroundings.

The event, held on the occasion of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay’s birth anniversary, began with a symbolic gesture of presenting a fruit basket to the daughter of a Safai Karamchari, followed by escorting the Chief Guest to the signature wall. A cloth bag distribution drive was also carried out to promote eco-friendly practices and discourage the use of single-use plastics. MoHUA also administered the ‘Swachhata ki Shapath’ to all participants, inspiring them to dedicate themselves towards cleanliness and sustainable living.

In his address, MoHUA Shri Manohar Lal Khattar emphasized the importance of community participation in ensuring the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission. He highlighted that cleanliness is not just a government initiative but a people’s movement that requires active involvement of every citizen. The MoHUA stressed that while cleanliness work was once considered uncommon or avoided by many, today it has become a people’s movement under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. MoHUA underlined that Swachhata is our adornment, our culture, our nature, our karma, and our dharma. Without cleanliness, no achievement or expertise can truly shine, he added

The Minister drew relatable examples, saying that just as we are naturally attracted towards cleanliness in people and surroundings, the same approach must be adopted in homes, shops, places of worship, schools, hospitals, community centres, and public spaces. He urged everyone to make cleanliness a daily practice rather than a one-day activity. Shri Khattar called upon all sections of society—including citizens, traders, students, and even media persons—to actively participate in the cleanliness drive, reminding that true change comes only when every individual contributes wholeheartedly.

Presen during the occasion were Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh; Sh. Pardeep Kumar, IAS, Special Commissioner, Municipal Corporation; Ms. Isha Kamboj, HCS, SDM South, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, MedicalOfficer of Health; and other officials of Municipal Corporation and Chandigarh Administration.
