Punjab Governor addresses Seminar on “Understanding Srimanta Shankardeva: A Multi-Faceted Genius” in PU

Srimant Shankardev Chair, Panjab University, in collaboration with the Department of History, today organized a seminar titled “Understanding Srimanta Shankardeva: A Multi-Faceted Genius.”

The important seminar featured three insightful sessions dedicated to exploring the life and contributions of Srimanta Shankardeva, a revered figure in Assamese culture and spirituality.

The inaugural session was graced by the presence of His Excellency, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh UT, who served as the chief guest. In his address, Shri Kataria emphasised the profound and timeless messages articulated by Srimanta Shankardeva, drawing parallels between his teachings and those of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His reflections resonated with the audience, highlighting the universal relevance of Shankardeva’s insights.

Welcoming the attendees, PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Renu Vig highlighted the significance of Srimanta Shankardeva’s philosophy in contemporary society. She urged the audience to embrace his ideals in today’s world. Srimanta Sankardev Chair Coordinator, Prof. Yojna Rawat welcomed the guests.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dayananda Pathak, who illuminated the multi-faceted nature of Shankardeva’s contributions, touching upon his writings on philosophy, life, culture, art, and tradition. Prof. Pathak’s insights provided a deeper understanding of how Shankardeva’s work continues to inspire and influence various fields.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by PU Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma, who expressed gratitude to all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions to the event. This seminar not only celebrated the legacy of Srimanta Shankardeva but also encouraged dialogue on the enduring impact of his teachings in modern times.

Plenary Session I was chaired by Prof. Dayananda Pathak and co-chaired by Prof. Yojna Rawat. This session focused on “Srimanta Shankardeva and His Contribution to the Visual Arts in the Tradition of Assam,” featuring insightful lectures from Prof. Dinesh Chaubey, Prof. Jai Prakash Sharma, and Dr. Moushumi Kandali. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sheena Pall, and was conducted by Dr. Tomeer Sharma from the Department of Sanskrit. A lunch was provided for all attendees following this session.

Plenary Session II, which followed lunch, was chaired by Prof. Dinesh Chaubey and co-chaired by Prof. Paru Bal Sidhu. This session featured engaging discussions on the theme of Shastriya Dance Tradition, with lectures delivered by Prof. Bandana Jha and Dr. Mallika Kandali.

The day continued with a Technical Session chaired by Prof. Bandana Jha and Prof. Monica Singh’ and co-chaired by Prof. Kumool Abi and Dr. Gaurav Gaur, where 25 research papers were presented by faculty and research scholars from Panjab University and beyond. The formal vote of thanks for this session was offered by Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson of the Department of History.

The seminar concluded with a Valedictory Session chaired by Prof. Chander Tirkha, during which a report was presented by Prof. Yojna Rawat, the seminar coordinator. The final vote of thanks was delivered by DSW-Women Prof. Simrit Kahlon. Participants were treated to high tea, fostering further discussion and networking among attendees.

This seminar not only celebrated the rich legacy of Srimanta Shankardeva but also facilitated meaningful dialogue on his lasting impact in various fields.
