*Raises Awareness and Improves Sanitary Waste Management under the Swachhata Ki Mohar Initiative during training at Pink MRF*
*Chandigarh, May 17:-* Aiming to make a lasting impact on Chandigarh’s cleanliness journey, the MC Chandigarh conducted training on the second day at Pink MRF to raise awareness and improve sanitary waste management under the ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ initiative by the expert team as part of a two-week-long exercise. The exercise coincides with International Menstrual Hygiene Day and aims to educate and empower both municipal staff and citizens on effective sanitary waste management.
The training session for the MRF staff underscored the importance of segregating sanitary waste from other waste streams, with the goal of leaving an indelible mark on the path towards a cleaner and greener India.
Over the course of the next two weeks, the exercise will cover all MRF staff, field staff, and door-to-door waste collectors. They will be trained on the significance of proper sanitary waste management. Additionally, the team will visit households across the city to educate citizens about the types of waste considered “sanitary” and provide information on eco-friendly menstrual hygiene options.
Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, said that the Municipal Corporation’s efforts have already yielded tangible results. Initially, the daily collection of sanitary waste was only 12-15 kilograms. However, over the last two years, the daily collection has increased to 650-700 kilograms. As per the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, sanitary waste must be processed through incineration, and the Municipal Corporation has been doing so through the authorized biomedical waste processing agency, Alliance Care.
She further added that as the Municipal Corporation moves towards 100% collection of segregated waste, this exercise will help the Corporation further improve the management of sanitary waste in the city.
The Municipal Commissioner appealed to all citizens to segregate their sanitary waste and hand it over to the Municipal Garbage Collector.
The two-week “Swachhata Ki Mohar” campaign aims to build on the progress made in waste segregation and management, with a focus on raising awareness and encouraging citizens to effectively segregate their sanitary waste.
