*Chandigarh, August 8:* Aiming to provide affordable items to those in need while promoting the concept of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR), the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has opened its ninth ‘One Rupee Store’ at the EWS Community Centre in Maloya. This new store was inaugurated under the ongoing “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign, which promotes sustainability and inclusivity aligned with the Swachh Bharat Mission.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, in the presence of MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, and area Councillor Smt. Nirmala Devi, inaugurated the new store, attended by other councillors, senior MCC officials, and prominent members of the ward.

Speaking on the occasion, City Mayor Kuldeep Kumar said that the MCC’s permanent RRR Center in Sector 17 has received an overwhelming response from citizens over the past year, enabling the establishment of this new Rupee Store. The aim of the Rupee Store is to provide affordable access to various items, such as books, electronics, clothing, crockery, kitchenware, toys, and bed sheets, all priced at just Rs. 1 per item, while promoting the RRR concept.

He further shared that the Sector 17 RRR Center collected a total of 62,000 approximately donated items from June 2023 to July 2024, including clothes, books,  footwear, and other items like crockery, toys, electronics, bags, home décor, and furniture. After cleaning, repairing, and refurbishing these donated items, the MCC is committed to organizing more such one-rupee stores in different areas and wards of the city.

MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, expressed gratitude to the citizens of the Tricity for their overwhelming response and support. She noted that this is the ninth successful one-rupee store, and the MCC is committed to establishing more such stores throughout the city to serve the community. The establishment of this store is a testament to the MCC’s efforts towards creating sustainable and inclusive practices that benefit citizens from all walks of life.

Since 2023, the MCC has embarked on a journey to promote sustainable behavior and practices among its citizens. As part of this initiative, eight one-rupee stores have already been successfully organized in Dhanas, Manimajra, Maloya, Sunder Nagar, Ramdarbar, a special store for Safaimitras, Sector 56, and Daddumajra. These stores have collectively sold approximately more than 30,000 items.

The Commissioner emphasized that this initiative under the “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign aims to protect and preserve the environment, instilling a pro-planet behavioral change through individual action in daily life. The MCC is reaffirming its dedication to sustainability and working towards a future where emphasis is placed on resourceful utilization, mindful consumption, and waste reduction. By embracing the principles of RRR, the Corporation is on a mission to create a Garbage Free City that is more resilient, equitable, and sustainable for generations to come.
