*Chandigarh, July 31:-* In an effort to enhance Chandigarh’s cleanliness and promote a healthier community, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh conducted a capacity-building and training workshop for Sanitary Inspectors and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative, part of the ‘Swachhata Ki Mohar’ program, aligns with the ‘Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao’ campaign.

The workshop aimed to refresh the training of Sanitary Inspectors and SHGs, focusing on the importance of waste segregation, home composting, and eco-friendly practices to promote a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) lifestyle.

As part of this awareness campaign, Sanitary Inspectors and SHGs will engage with citizens across the city, educating them on proper waste management, home composting, and adopting eco-friendly choices to support an RRR lifestyle.

MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, highlighted that this initiative seeks to build on the progress made in waste segregation and management. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage effective waste segregation and the adoption of eco-friendly options in daily life.

Experts trained the SHGs on proper waste segregation, home composting, avoiding banned single-use plastics, and adopting a zero-waste lifestyle.

The Commissioner said that the MCC’s unwavering commitment to progressive development, which has been recognized nationally. The contributions of each officer and staff member have led to significant progress in solid waste management, including achieving 100% collection of segregated waste from households and commercial areas.

She also mentioned that with the cooperation of citizens, Chandigarh has improved its Swachh Survekshan ranking from 66th in 2021 to 11th in 2023. The city was honored with the ‘Safaimitra Surakshit’ title by Her Excellency, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu.

She also highlighted the city’s achievements in waste management, including a state-of-the-art composting plant in Dadumajra with a capacity of 300 TPD. The plant has produced 163.06 MT of compost from segregated wet waste in just four months (up to July 22, 2024). This compost will be used in all 1,800 parks and gardens across the city and will be available to farmers for agricultural use.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of combining efforts and sharing achievements to continue the journey toward the ‘Garbage-Free City’ mission. The platform encourages the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and innovative ideas to propel the city toward even greater heights.

She appealed to all citizens to segregate their waste and hand it over to the Municipal Garbage Collector. By adopting RRR practices like home composting and choosing eco-friendly options, citizens can contribute to the ‘Garbage-Free City’ mission.
