*Chandigarh, September 19:-* In a significant move to engage school students, teachers, and communities in promoting cleanliness and sustainability, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a mass Swachhata Pledge ceremony today under the ongoing Swachhata Hi Sewa-2025 Pakhwara, themed “Swachhotsav”.
The pledge was administered by Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh, wherein over 125 schools across the city participated virtually through Google Meet sessions in classrooms and school assemblies. The pledge emphasized giving time for swachhata, personal hygiene, proper waste disposal, elimination of single-use plastics, and adoption of eco-friendly practices.
Others present on the occassion were Sh. Pardeep Kumar, IAS, Special Commissioner, Sh. Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health, Sh. K P Singh, SE Horticulture and other employees of MCC.
Sh. Amit Kumar highlighted that this fortnight-long initiative is being conducted across educational institutions throughout the city with the goal of instilling lifelong values of sanitation, hygiene, and sustainable living. A wide range of participatory and awareness-building activities are being held, including:
Swachhta Shapath (Cleanliness Pledges)
Campus cleanliness drives
Essay-writing and painting competitions
Rallies and cultural events
Tree plantation drives
He remarked that the Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign is more than a government initiative—it is a people’s movement, reinforcing the idea that cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Focusing on schools this year, the campaign acknowledges that children are powerful change-makers who influence their families and communities by adopting and promoting clean habits.
Sh. Amit Kumar further appreciated the proactive role of schools in organizing special cleanliness drives, involving not just students but also teachers and non-teaching staff in cleaning classrooms, playgrounds, libraries, washrooms, and surrounding areas.
He also appealed to schools to organize “Prabhat Pheris” (morning rallies) in their respective neighborhoods, carrying placards, banners, and cleanliness slogans. These community-driven efforts aim to increase public awareness and involve parents, local residents, and shopkeepers in the cleanliness mission.
The Commissioner concluded by stating that the MCC has carefully designed the activities to be both educational and experiential, allowing students to learn through action and contribute meaningfully toward building a cleaner and greener Chandigarh.
