
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the world’s largest open
university, celebrated its 40 th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm, highlighting its
commitment to expanding access to quality education through open and distance learning.
On this occasion at IGNOU Hqrs. Prof. Peter Scott, FRSN, President and CEO,
Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver, Canada was the chief guest. Special Cover of Indian
Postal Department commemorating 40 th Foundation Day of IGNOU was released.
Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor, in the keynote address, emphasized IGNOU’s
role in democratizing education and reaffirmed the university’s dedication to reaching
learners in remote, marginalized, and underserved communities. She encouraged students to
take full advantage of IGNOU’s diverse academic offerings and technology-enabled learning
ecosystem.
The event, held at the IGNOU Headquarters was attended by IGNOU Regional
Centre Chandigarh. The celebration marked IGNOU’s continuous progress in promoting
inclusive and flexible education since its establishment in 1985.
Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh, Sr. Regional Centre, Chandigarh highlighted IGNOU’s
expanding academic footprint, digital transformation, and initiatives aimed at improving
learner support services, including online counselling, e-content development, and enhanced
accessibility through mobile learning tools.
