The event took place at Sector 26 Mandi, with the aim to promote eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic.
The campaign was officially launched by Sh. Pardeep Kumar, IAS, Special Commissioner, MCC, who distributed free cloth bags to shoppers and encouraged them to adopt sustainable practices. He was joined by Area Councillor Sh. Dalip Sharma, Chief Engineer Sh. Sanjay Arora, other senior officials, and local shopkeepers.
The MCC team under the leadership of Special Commissioner also conducted a plastic waste collection drive in the Mandi area and educated shopkeepers, vendors, and residents on the importance of waste segregation at the source.
Speaking at the occasion, Sh. Pardeep Kumar emphasized the hazardous effects of single-use plastic and reiterated MCC’s commitment to making Chandigarh plastic-free. He urged citizens to completely shun polythene bags and shift to cloth or other biodegradable alternatives.
To further support the movement, the MCC plans to organize exhibitions in collaboration with NGOs to provide training on making paper and cloth bags using waste newspapers, old cloths and reusable materials.
