Chandigarh, September 30:- Reaffirming its commitment to promoting a clean environment and improving sanitation standards in the city, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a community-led mega cleanliness drive at Apni Mandi, Sector-34, as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. This initiative coincided with the celebration of the 155th Gandhi Jayanti, during which mass cleanliness drives were conducted at 155 locations between September 17 and September 30.

Today, approximately 500 volunteers participated in the cleanliness drive at Apni Mandi, including Joint Commissioner Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, MOH Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Area Councillor Smt. Prem Lata, Brand Ambassador Sh. Praveen Duggal, MCC officials, citizens, and Swachhata Champions. Together, they paid a heartfelt tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, through this mass cleanliness initiative.

Approximately 2900 kg of waste was collected, including dry waste, wet waste, C&D (construction and demolition) waste, and coconut waste, all of which was sent to dedicated processing plants.

The extensive cleanliness drive, carried out across 155 locations between September 17 and September 30, was marked by passion and enthusiasm. It brought together a wide range of organizations, departments, schools, NGOs, and citizens from all walks of life. Participants included children, women, senior citizens, college students, celebrities, and prominent personalities. The cleaning efforts covered various areas within each ward, including parks maintained by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market areas and their back lanes cleaned by Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), public toilets, schools, forest areas, mandis, transport hubs, gaushalas, sarovars, and residential neighborhoods.

This inclusive effort highlights the collective spirit of Chandigarh’s citizens and their dedication to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.

A plantation drive was also held in collaboration with NHPC Limited , regional office & CPCC , resulting in the planting of approximately 250 saplings.

Additionally, 15 Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) were identified, and regular cleanliness drives were conducted by the community, NGOs, government organizations (BMBB & NHPC), and the MCC team of Safaimitras.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar also commended the overwhelming participation in the drive, remarking that the success of this cleanliness initiative showcases the collective efforts of our community. It is heartening to see citizens of all ages come forward to make Chandigarh a cleaner and healthier place. With continued commitment, I am confident that we can set an example for cities across the nation, he mentioned.

MC Commissioner Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS, praised the efforts of the citizens and organizations involved, stating, “Under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, Chandigarh witnessed a remarkable display of civic pride and responsibility.
