Chandigarh among Centre’s 3 Star garbage Free Cities

Chandigarh, May 19:- Chandigarh got 3 star garbage free city tag today in the rating of cities for their garbage management.

While sharing this information Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh said that the government today released a rating of cities for their garbage management, giving the ‘3 Star garbage-free’ tag to Chandigarh, while announcing that the Swachh Bharat Mission has been the greatest strength in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said that Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the results of garbage-free star rating for the cities.

She said that it was made possible with the able guidance and administration of Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab & Administrator, Chandigarh and Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that the star rating of garbage free cities is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, envisions to enable cities to gradually evolve into a model (7-Star) city, with progressive improvements in their overall cleanliness. The star rating conditions were based on 25 key parameters across the solid waste management spectrum and has been designed to both help cities assess their progress while encouraging them to move towards a better rating thereby improving their cities’ overall cleanliness and aesthetics.

He further said that in order to institutionalize a mechanism for cities to achieve garbage free status, and to motivate the cities to achieve higher degrees of cleanliness, a Star rating protocol was defined for garbage free cities, which builds on aspirations of cities to progress towards higher standards of Swachhata.

The Commissioner said that the star rating was supported by a robust verification mechanism to ensure transparency and standardization. Cities were required to carry out self-assessment and self-verification for achieving a certain star rating. This self-declaration was further verified through an independent third-party agency appointed by MoHUA for Star Garbage free ratings, he added.

He further said “we are committed to serve city beautiful with full dedication and sincerity”.

While expressing her gratitude towards each stakeholder of the City beautiful, the Mayor said that this tag has been achieved with the full co-operation and contribution of each stakeholder of the city including RWAs, MWAs, Hotal Associations, Schools, Colleges, Govt. institutes, societies and “Safai Sainiks” of MCC. She appealed to all these stakeholders to maintain this status and sought cooperation to achieve the next milestone in garbage disposal management.
