एएनएम स्कूल में विश्व मलेरिया दिवस पर ‘जीरो मलेरिया-स्टॉर्ट विद मीÓ विषय पर जागरूकता कार्यक्रम आयोजित
आज स्थानीय जिला नागरिक हस्पताल स्थित ए.एन.एम. स्कूल में विश्व मलेरिया दिवस पर जागरूकता कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया गया। कार्यक्रम का विषय ‘जीरो मलेरिया-स्टॉर्ट विद मीÓ रहा। इस अवसर पर मुख्य अतिथि सिविल सर्जन डा. गोविन्द गुप्ता थे। इस कार्यक्रम की अध्यक्षता उप सिविल सर्जन (वी.बी.डी.) डा. दीप ने की।
सिविल सर्जन डा. गोविंद गुप्ता ने कहा कि आज का दिन विश्व मलेरिया दिवस के रूप में मनाया जा रहा है जिसका थीम है ‘जीरो मलेरिया-स्टॉर्ट विद मीÓ जिसमें आमजन को जागरूक किया जाएगा। उन्होंने कहा कि इस दिवस का मुख्य उद्देश्य मलेरिया से लोगों को जागरूक और उनके जीवन की रक्षा करना है। विश्वभर में यह दिवस मलेरिया निवारण और नियंत्रण के लिए मनाया जाता है।
उप सिविल सर्जन (वी.बी.डी.) डा. दीप ने छात्राओ को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि मच्छर जनित रोग जैसे मलेरिया, डेंगू, चिकनगुनिया, कालाजार, जे.ई. से बचने के लिए सबसे पहले महत्वपूर्ण कार्य है कि हम मच्छर को पैदा ही न होने दें। इसके लिए अपने घरों में सीमेंट से बनी टंकियों को पूरी तरह ढक कर रखें। सप्ताह में एक बार टंकियों, कूलरों, गमलों, शौचालयों में पड़े घड़ों, छतों पर पड़े बेकार टायरों, पशु-पक्षियों के पानी पीने के बर्तनों व अन्य पानी के स्त्रोतों को खाली करे व रगड़कर साफ करे व फिर पानी भरे।
उन्होंने कहा कि अपने घरों के आस-पास 7 दिनों से ज्यादा पानी खड़ा न होने दे। खड़े पानी में मच्छर अंडे देता हैं, जो 7 दिनों में पुन: मच्छर बनकर मलेरिया, डेंगू, चिकनगुनिया, कालाजार, जे.ई. जैसी खतरनाक बीमारियां फैलाता है। किसी भी बुखार की अनदेखी न करे, तुरन्त ख्ूान की जांच करवाए और मलेरिया पाए जाने पर पूर्ण उपचार (14 दिन तक) ले। इसके अतिरिक्त सिविल सर्जन द्धारा अच्छा कार्य करने वाले एमपीएचएस (मेल), एमपीएचडब्लयू (मेल) व एलटी को सम्मानित किया।

The Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development and Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on the theme ‘Gender Equality and Justice in 21st Century: Prospects and Challenges’ by Smt. Rekha Sharma Chairperson, National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, discussed about the various problems and challenges faced by women in 21st Century and the biggest challenges mindset of society which needs to be changed from own family. She said that even in today’s time there are fewer opportunities to women in comparison to men. She emphasized that there is a need to provide equal opportunity to uplift the status of women. It is very important for women to earn and become financially secure and also be aware of their legal rights. While talking about Gender we should always emphasize on equal opportunities as Gender Justice means removing the discrimination based on gender. She also stressed that women are 50 percent of the total population and we are still struggling for 33 per cent reservation. There is a need to have a proactive and protective mechanism to protect the rights of the women and to provide them with the equal opportunities. She urged the youngsters to become aware of the women issues and to spread it too.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh, while quoting various scriptures, discussed how women were held at high position and were respected and worshipped as goddesses. He further said that this narrative has changed in 21st Century where women face numerous challenges. Although the law provides equal rights and opportunities to both men and women, but in reality, the situation is different. He emphasised the empowerment of women must begun at the family level and it will automatically lead to a change in the mindset of the society.
Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties emphasized that we are already in 21st century and it is high time that we should have a society with equality and justice for both the genders in the society. She further stated that such interactive sessions must be held regularly to bring change in the mindset.
Dr. Rajesh K. Chander, Chairperson, Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development emphasized that there is a need for multipronged strategy to change the mindset so that we have a gender equal and inclusive society. He stressed that the students must play a proactive role to bring change in the society.
The session ended with active participation of the audience by asking questions related to the theme of the lecture. The session was attended by senior officials, Chairpersons, Directors, faculty members, research scholars and students from diverse faculties of the University.

One of the Big Four Accounting Companies of the world, KPMG offered package of 4.99 lakhs per annum along with medical benefits to five students of University Institute of Legal Studies(UILS), Panjab University Chandigarh as a part of its Annual Placement Drive Negotium 2019 which was organized by the Career Development Cell, UILS. Out of 17 students shortlisted, 5 were offered the job.
It is a glorious moment for the department as KPMG has been coming to the campus for three consecutive years now. The Managing Partner, of KPMG Mr Atul Gandhi interacted with the students who were shortlisted on the basis of their CVs. The opening speech was an enlightening and invigorating one where he explained the outreach and work of the company. The Manager, Ms Saudamini Shrotiya highlighted the nuanced legal work undertaken by the company out of which Fraud and Forensic Analysis was the most important and gave an overview of the multifarious nature of dealings with the other companies.
The HR Ms. Samta Jain gave the aspirants an insight into the corporate work and multi cultural atmosphere of the company, nature of work, the transformative nature of life at KPMG and what qualities does the company look for in the candidates during the recruitment process. The company highlighted the remarkable progress of the students who were recruited from UILS last year.
उपायुक्त एवं जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह लघु सचिवालय स्थित अपने कार्यालय में कार्यक्रमों के प्रबंधों के लिये अधिकारियों की आयोजित बैठक की अध्यक्षता करते हुए।
उपायुक्त एवं जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ने कहा कि लोकसभा चुनाव 2019 में जिला पंचकूला में मतदान प्रतिशत बढ़ाने के लिये मतदाता जागरूकता कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जायेंगे। उन्होंने बताया कि इन कार्यक्रमों के तहत 27 अप्रैल को पंचकूला जिला के मुख्य विद्यालयों से जागरूकता रैलियां निकालकर शहरवासियों को अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग करने के लिये प्रेरित किया जायेगा। इसके अलावा 28 अप्रैल को प्रातः 11 बजे सेक्टर-1 स्थित लोक निर्माण विभाग के विश्राम गृह में ऐसे मतदाताओं के लिये विशेष कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया जायेगा, जिनका जन्मदिवस 12 मई को है।
डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह आज लघु सचिवालय स्थित अपने कार्यालय में इन कार्यक्रमों के प्रबंधों के लिये अधिकारियों की आयोजित बैठक की अध्यक्षता कर रहे थे। स्कूली बच्चों की रैलियों के इस कार्यक्रम में 27 अप्रैल को प्रातः 9 बजे उपायुक्त सेक्टर-20 स्थित राजकीय संस्कति माॅडल स्कूल से रैली को झंडी दिखाकर रवाना करेंगे। इसी दिन प्रातः 9 बजे ही सेक्टर-12 स्थित सार्थक माॅडल स्कूल से अतिरिक्त उपायुक्त उत्तम सिंह, सेक्टर-19 स्थित राजकीय विद्यालय से नगराधीश गगनदीप सिंह, सेक्टर-7 स्थित राजकीय विद्यालय से एसडीएम कालका श्रीमती मनीता मलिक, सेक्टर-6 स्थित राजकीय विद्यालय से जिला शिक्षा अधिकारी एचएस सैनी जागरूकता रैलियों को रवाना करेंगे। इसके अलावा राजकीय विद्यालय अभयपुर, बुढ़नपुर, कुंडी तथा सेक्टर-17 स्थित राजकीय विद्यालयों से शिक्षा विभाग के अधिकारी ऐसी रैलियों को रवाना करेंगे।
एसडीएम पंकज सेतिया ने बताया कि 28 अप्रैल को प्रातः 11 बजे सेक्टर-1 पंचकूला स्थित लोक निर्माण विभाग विश्राम गृह में ऐसे मतदाताओं के लिये विशेष कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जायेंगे, जिनका जन्म दिवस मतदान के दिन 12 मई को है। इस कार्यक्रम में उपायुक्त डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ऐसे मतदाताओं को मतदान के लिये प्रोत्साहित करने के साथ साथ अन्य मतदाताओं को भी अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग करने के लिये प्रेरित करने के लिये आवश्यक जानकारी देंगे। उन्होंने बताया कि इस मौके पर एक प्रश्नोतरी का आयोजन किया जायेगा और प्रश्नों के सही जवाब देने वाले मतदाताओं को उपायुक्त सम्मानित भी करेंगे। उन्होंने बताया कि जिला पंचकूला में 960 ऐसे मतदाता है, जिनका जन्म दिवस 12 मई को है।

उपायुक्त डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ने बताया कि जिला की अनाज मंडियों में गेंहू का खरीद कार्य सुचारू रूप से जारी है। उन्होंने बताया कि 24 अप्रैल तक तीनों अनाज मंडियों बरवाला, पंचकूला व रायपुररानी में 25976 टन गेंहू की खरीद की जा चुकी है।
उन्होंने बताया कि इस अवधि में बरवाला अनाजमंडी में 13165 टन, पंचकूला अनाजमंडी में 5556 टन और रायपुररानी अनाजमंडी में 7255 टन गेंहू खरीदी जा चुकी है। उन्होंने बताया कि गेंहू की खरीद हैफेड और हरियाणा भंडारण निगम द्वारा की जा रही है। उन्होंने बताया कि 24 अप्रैल को हैफेड द्वारा 20420 टन तथा हरियाणा भंडारण निगम द्वारा 5556 टन गेंहू की खरीद की गई है। उन्होनंे खरीद एजेंसियों को निर्देश दिये कि वे खरीदे गये अनाज की मंडियों से शीघ्र उठवाना सुनिश्चित करें ताकि किसानों को अपनी फसल डालने में किसी प्रकार की कोई दिक्कत न हो।

लोकसभा आम चुनाव में मतदाताओं को किसी भी प्रकार की असुविधा नहीं होनी चाहिए, ताकि बिना किसी बाधा के मतदाता अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग कर सके। बूथ पर शौचालय, पानी व रैंप की सुविधा प्राथमिकता के आधार पर सुनिश्चित हों।
हर विधानसभा क्षेत्र में पिंक व मॉडल बूथ भी बनाए जाएंगे
ये निर्देश उपायुक्त प्रभजोत सिंह ने आज लघुसचिवालय स्थित वीसी रूम में उपस्थित पीओ व एपीओ की प्रथम रेन्डाइजेशन के अवसर पर उपस्थित सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारियों को दिए। इस अवसर पर एसडीएम सिरसा वीरेंद्र चौधरी, एसडीएम ऐलनाबाद अमित कुमार, एसडीएम डबवाली औमप्रकाश, डीआरओ राजेंद्र जांगड़ा, डीडीपीओ कूलभूषण बंसल व चुनाव तहसीलदार रामनिवास जांगड़ा सहित अन्य अधिकारी उपस्थित थे।
उपायुक्त प्रभजोत सिंह ने सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारियों को बूथों पर सभी सुविधाएं पुख्ता करने के दिए दिशा-निर्देश
जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी ने कहा कि जिन स्थानों पर एक – दो से अधिक मतदान केन्द्र है ऐसे स्थानों पर मतदाताओं की मदद के लिए हैल्प डेस्क बनाए जाए और संबंधित बीएलओ को लगाया जाए ताकि वह मतदान के लिए आने वाले नागरिकों को उनके बूथ के बारे में जानकारी दे सके। उन्होंने कहा कि चुनाव आयोग शतप्रतिशत मतदान के लिए गंभीरतापूर्वक प्रयास कर रहा है और इसके लिए अनेकों प्रकार से मतदाता को मतदान के प्रति जागरूक भी किया जा रहा है। इसी कड़ी में बूथों पर सभी आवश्यक सुविधाएं भी शतप्रतिशत मतदान में अहम भूमिका निभाएंगी। इसलिए सभी सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी यह सुनिश्चित कर लें कि उनके संबंधित विधानसभा क्षेत्र में बूथों पर चुनाव आयोग की हिदायतोनुरूप सभी आवश्यक सुविधाएं उपलब्ध रहें, ताकि मतदाता को किसी प्रकार की शिकायत का मौका ना मिले।
उन्होंने कहा कि बूथ पर शौचालय की सुविधा को प्राथमिकता के आधार लेते हुए इस दिशा में गंभीरतापूर्वक कार्य करें। जिस बूथ पर शौचालय खराब हालत में हैं, उन्हें समय रहते दुरूस्त करवा लें। जहां पर शौचालय नहीं बना हुआ है, वहां पर अस्थाई शौचालय की व्यवस्था इस प्रकार की हो कि महिलाओं को किसी प्रकार की असहजता महसूस ना होने पाए। चुनाव आयोग का प्रयास है कि अबकी बार हर सीनियर सिटीजन व दिव्यांग मतदाता बिना बाधा के अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग अवश्य करें। इसलिए सभी सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी ये सुनिश्चित करें कि बूथों पर रैंप की व्यवस्था इस प्रकार से हो कि दिव्यांग मतदाता को चढने व उतरने में कोई दिक्कत ना हो। उन्होंने कहा चुनाव पर्यवेक्षक बूथों का निरीक्षण कर सकते हैं, इसलिए सभी सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी ये सभी सुविधाओं का बूथों पर होना सुनिश्चित कर लें।
जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी ने कहा कि जहां पर भी दो से अधिक बूथ हैं, वहां पर हैल्प डेस्क बनाया जाएगा। हैल्प डेस्क से मतदाता अपने बूथ के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त कर सकेगा। इसके लिए उन्होंने सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारियों को ऐसी बूथ लोकेशन को चिन्हित कर इस दिशा मेंं कार्य करने के निर्देश दिए। उन्होंने कहा कि मतदान के प्रति लोगों को प्रोत्साहित करने के उद्ेश्य से प्रत्येक विधानसभा क्षेत्र में पिंक व मॉडल बूथ भी बनाए जाएंगे। इसके लिए सभी सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी सभी आवश्यक तैयारियां पूर्ण कर लें। उन्होंने कहा कि पिंक बूथ पर सभी कार्य महिला अधिकारी व कर्मचारी करेंगे। पिंक बूथ पर मतदान प्रक्रिया संपन्न कराने से लेकर सुरक्षा तक का जिम्मा महिलाओं पर होगा। उन्होंने पिंक बूथों महिला कर्मचारियों की ड्यूटी इस प्रकार से लगानी हैं, ताकि उन्हें किसी प्रकार की असुविधा ना हो और वो अपने आपको असहज महसूस ना करें।

सिरसा लोकसभा क्षेत्र में 12 बे्रल लिपि जानकार दिव्यांग मतदाताओं को किया गया है चिन्हित
निर्वाचन आयोग लोकसभा आम चुनाव में शतप्रतिशत मतदान के लिए प्रयासरत है। दिव्यांग मतदाता भी अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग बिना किसी बाधा व असुविधा के कर सके इसके लिए आयोग ने अलग से विशेष सुविधाएं मुहैया करवाने का निर्णय लिया है। जहां दिव्यांग मतदाताओं के लिए व्हील चेयर, रैंप, सहायक आदि की व्यवस्था की जाएगी वहीं ऐसे दृष्टिबाधित दिव्यांग मतदाता जो ब्रेल लिपि जानते हैं, उन्हें ब्रेल लिपि में वोटर स्लीप उपलब्ध करवाई जाएगी।
जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी एवं उपायुक्त प्रभजोत सिंह ने बताया कि चुनाव आयोग के निर्देशानुसार दिव्यांग मतदाताओं को दी जाने वाली सभी आवश्यक सुविधाओं बारे पुख्ता प्रबंध कर लिए गए हैं और इस दिशा में कार्य जारी है। आयोग ने इस बार दृष्टिबाधित दिव्यांग मतदाताओं के लिए ब्रेल लिपि में सामग्री उपलब्ध करवाने का निर्णय लिया है। जहां तक सिरसा लोकसभा क्षेत्र की बात हैं, प्रशासन द्वारा अभी तक क्षेत्र के ऐसे 12 दृष्टिबाधित दिव्यांग मतदाताओं की पहचान कर ली है, जो ब्रेल लिपि जानते हैं। दिव्यांग मतदाताओं के लिए क्षेत्र में पडऩे वाले सभी बूथों पर आवश्यकता अनुसार रैंप की व्यवस्था कर दी गई है। मतदाताओं को किसी प्रकार की असुविधा ना हो, इसके लिए व्हील चेयर की भी व्यवस्था पु ता की जाएगी।
अभिभावक डीसी, एडीसी व संबंधित एसडीएम के दूरभाष नम्बर पर ब्रेल लिपि जानकार दिव्यांग मतदाता की जानकारी

जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी एवं उपायुक्त प्रभजोत सिंह ने बताया कि लोकसभा आम चुनाव-2019 के लिए 12 मई को मतदान के दिन वैतनिक अवकाश रहेगा।
उपायुक्त प्रभजोत सिंह ने बताया कि जनप्रतिनिधि अधिनियम की धारा 135 बी के तहत 12 मई को वेतन सहित अवकाश घोषित किया गया है ताकि सभी मतदाताओं को अपने मताधिकार का इस्तेमाल करने का अवसर मिल सके। उन्होंने बताया कि मतदान के दिन सभी दुकानें, वाणिज्य संस्थान, भवन निर्माण इकाइयां और औद्योगिक संस्थान पूर्णतया बंद रहेंगे तथा कर्मचारियों को इस दिन का पूरा वेतन दिया जाएगा।
उन्होंने बताया कि आपातकालीन सेवाओं में कार्यरत कर्मचारियों को भी अपने मत प्रयोग करने का पूरा अवसर दिया जाएगा तथा शहर से बाहर या दूसरे विधानसभा क्षेत्रों से आने वाले कर्मचारियों को मतदान के लिए अपने गृहक्षेत्र में जाने की छूट होगी जिसके लिए नियोक्ता द्वारा वैकल्पिक व्यवस्था की जाएगी। उन्होंने बताया कि जनप्रतिनिधि अधिनियम की धारा 135 बी की अनुपालना सुनिश्चित करने के लिए औद्योगिक सुरक्षा एवं स्वास्थ्य के उप निदेशक रमेश सिंह को नोडल अधिकारी नियुक्त किया गया है।

लोकसभा आम चुनाव के लिए प्रशासन की ओर से सभी तैयारियां गंभीरता के साथ पूर्ण की जा रही है, जिसके लिए अधिकारियों व कर्मचारियों की अलग-अलग जिम्मेवारियां बाबत ड्ïयूटियां लगाई गई है। इसी कड़ी में 45-सिरसा विधानसभा क्षेत्र के लिए चुनाव सामग्री वितरण करने व इसे वापिस जमा करवाने के लिए सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी एवं अतिरिक्त उपायुक्त मनदीप कौर ने ड्ïयूटियां निर्धारित की हैं।
उन्होंने बताया कि चुनाव सामग्री वितरण का कार्य स्थानीय चौ. देवीलाल विश्वविद्यालय में किया जाएगा। निर्वाचन सामग्री वितरण हेतु 10 टेबल लगाई जाएगी। उन्होंने बताया कि कर्मचारियों की ड्ïयूटी 11 मई को प्रात: 7 बजे से तथा 12 मई को सायं 5 बजे से रहेगी। सभी कर्मचारी अपनी ड्ïयूटी पर निर्धारित समय पर पहुंचना सुनिश्चित करेंगे।
एडीसी ने बताया कि पोलिंग पार्टियों को 11 मई को प्रात: 7 बजे चुनाव सामग्री का वितरण किया जाएगा तथा 12 मई को मतदान समाप्ति उपरांत पोलिंग पार्टियां सेे निर्वाचन सामग्री जमा करवाई जाएगी। उन्होंने सामग्री वितरण व जमा करने में लगे कर्मचारियों को निर्देश देते हुए कहा कि वे इस कार्य को आयोग के हिदायतोनुसार करेंगे और इसमें पूरी एहतियात बरतेंगे।
उन्होंने बताया कि पोलिंग पार्टियों को निर्वाचन सामग्री, ईवीएम व वीवीपैट के वितरण व मतदान उपरांत निर्वाचन सामग्री को स्ट्रांग रुम में सही ढंग से रखवाने के लिए एसडीओ (प.रा.) राम कुमार, परियोजना अधिकारी अक्षय ऊर्जा मनोज जैन, सहायक परियोजना अधिकारी संजय कुमार, पटवानी कश्मीर चंद की ड्यूटियां लगाई गई है। निर्वाचन सामग्री वितरण कार्य हेतु इन सभी टेबलों की मॉनेटरिंग के लिए टेबल 1 से 5 तक खंड विकास एवं पंचायत अधिकारी सिरसा व 6 से 10 तक नगर परिषद सिरसा के कार्यकारी अधिकारी की ड्यूटियां लगाई गई है।
इसके अलावा पोलिंग पार्टियों द्वारा मांग अनुसार किसी सामग्री में कमी होने पर पूरा करने के लिए समाज शिक्षा एवं पंचायत अधिकारी उमेद कुमार व उनके साथ दो ग्राम सचिवों की ड्यूटियां लगाई गई है।

Botany Department, Panjab University successfully organized 5th & 6th Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award Lectures at 11.00 a.m. on April 24, 2019 at Auditorium of Botany Department. Chairperson of the Botany Department, Prof. (Dr.) Daizy R. Batish gave the welcome address.
Prof (Dr.) Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his inaugural address, he enlightened the audience about Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award Lectures and also congratulated and appreciated the efforts of Botany department for organizing the event. He also said about Prof. Kashyap was conferred Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) during special convocation (December 4-6, 1933) in the golden jubilee celebrations of the University along with Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose. He was given the title of ‘Rai Sahib’ in 1920 and ‘Rai Bahadur’ in 1929 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to academic services. Subsequently, the dignitaries were honoured and felicitations were offered.Prof. Promila Pathak, introduced both the awardees Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi, JC Bose Fellow, CCMB, Hyderabad & Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir K. Sopory, SERB Distinguished Fellow, ICGEB, Delhi). She introduced the first awardee and mentioned his achievements stating that Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi, presently working as JC Bose Fellow (DST), CCMB, Hyderbad. He did his Master of Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Ph.D. from University of Oregon, USA in 1989. He did his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. Franklin Stahl and the topic of his research was “Genetic Recombination in Bacteriophage”. After that, he did his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Imran Siddiqi is a well-known geneticist. His research has shown a lot of promise and progress in the areas of apomixes, meiosis and gametogenesis in plants. Since 1992, he is a Scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. He has established his own Siddiqi Lab at CCMB, Hyderabad. He has been a Visiting Professor in the Laboratory of Prof. V. Sunderasan, Institute of Molecular Agrobiology, Singapore as well as in the Laboratory of Prof. Ueli Grossniklaus, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. He has a number of publications in highly esteemed journals like Science, Nature, Biotechnology Journal, BMC Molecular Biology and Genome. Prof. Imran has to his credit a number of fellowships and awards such as: Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Bombay, INFOSYS Prize in Life Sciences, Fellowship of The Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and The Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Siddiqi is a member of Editorial Board of The Journal of Biosciences, Genetics and BMC Plant Biology.
The speaker for the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi delivered his lecture on the topic “21st Century Economics GM Crops in the Indian Context: Will the Past Inform the Future?”.
The next awardee for the 6th Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap Oration Award was Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory who is currently working as SERB Distinguished Fellow of the Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, at ICGEB, New Delhi . He began his academic career in the year 1973 as a Faculty at the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University and worked there till 1996. His teaching and research career spans over 45 years inclusive of that as Visiting Scientist at Max-Planck-Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Germany; visiting Fulbright fellow at the Department of Botany, University of Texas, USA and Plant Molecular Biology Lab of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USA, and visiting Humboldt Professor at the University of Munich, Germany. He was the first one to work out in detail “the role of glyoxalase pathway in plant stress biology”. His researches have been documented in over 250 articles published in peer reviewed journals. He has been the editor of 13 books and has contributed more than 50 chapters in books. He has been the President of the Indian Society of Plant Physiology and the Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad; Indian Society for Plant Physiology and Biochemistry; Indian National Science Academy, Delhi; and the Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, New Delhi and is a former secretary of the Plant Tissue Culture Association of India. Prof. Sopory has been the recipient of many National and International honours for his pioneering contributions to Scientific Research and Teaching, including the 1987 Shanti Swarup Bhatangar Prize by CSIR, the highest Indian award in the Science and Technology categories. Some of the other notable awards include T. N. Khoshoo Memorial Award, B. M. Johri Memorial Award, NASI Prof. R. N. Tandon Memorial Award, and Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour by the Government of India. He is an elected Fellow of several major Indian science academies. He is the first Indian to receive Corresponding Membership Award of American Society for Plant Biology in 2010. He was the Eleventh Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University from Jan. 2011 to Jan 2016.
The speaker for the occasion, Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory delivered his lecture on the topic “Strategies towards Developing Plant Tolerance under Abiotic Stress”
Prof. (Dr.) Girish Sahni was the chair of the session during the occasion. In his address, he thanked the Guest Speakers, Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi and Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sopory for taking out time from their busy schedule to grace the University with their solicit presence and agreeing to enlighten the audience with their vast knowledge and experience.
Prof. Promila Pathak presented a vote of thanks. She thanked DUI, Prof. Shankarji Jha for gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, despite his busy schedule, and Dr. Girish Sahni, for presiding over the session. She on behalf of the department, also expressed deep regards and heartiest thanks to Honourable Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Prof (Dr.) Raj Kumar for his guidance, support and encouragement. She also appreciated and acknowledged the contributions and opinions shared by eminent Speakers for today’s gathering Prof. (Dr.) Imran Siddiqi, and Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir K. Sopory for stimulating the environment with their interesting and thought provoking lectures.
