Physics Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized 5th Prof. B.M. Anand memorial lecture which was delivered by Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi, Director, Tata Institute of fundamental research (TIFR) Mumbai, here today.

Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi started his lecture on “Quantum entanglement” starting with the basics of quantum mechanics and the theory of John Bell  with the idea that probability cannot be negative. He built up the quantum entanglement theory with the idea from the solid state physics and Quantum mechanics and gradually introduced the concept of quantum computers. He demonstrated the work on quantum computers in India 
and abroad and speculated that Quantum computer will be a reality in near future and the computer speed will increase many folds.

Prof. Navdeep Goyal, Chairperson, Department of Physics gave introduction about physics department and regarding Prof. B.M. Anand Lecture. Prof. Arun K. Grover, Ex- Vice Chancellor of PU explained the history of Prof. B.M. Anand  Lecture with  life and works of Prof. B.M. Anand. Prof. K.N. Pathak, Ex-Vice Chancellor of Panjab University introduced Prof. Sandip P. Trivedi and briefed about his lecture. 

The programme was attended by nearly 250 delegates consisting of students and faculty members of PU and nearby institutes.  Students showed great interest and their queries were answered by the speaker.

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Gold: Opportunities in the Agri and Solid Waste discussed at PU

5th workshop of Swachhata Action Plan (SAP), a high impact event, on the
theme, ‘Management of Biomass (Agri waste and Municipal waste) into Bioresources’, under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, was organized by DST-Centre for Policy Research, Panjab University, Chandigarh in association with Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), here today.

The proceedings of the event were kicked off by address of Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions, Panjab University, who insisted to look at the holistic development of agriculture with special focus on Agri-waste management, in terms of natural philosophy, taking examples from Upanishads.

The Chief Principal Secretary to CM (Punjab), Mr. Suresh Kumar, who graced the occasion as a chief guest, reiterated that Punjab Government was all set to tackle the problem of solid waste management and looked forward to support from Central Government. 

The Keynote address was delivered by Dr. M H Mehta, a Padma Shri awardee, who heads the Gujarat Life Sciences in Ahmedabad. Dr. Mehta highlighted the issue of 20 day window from paddy to wheat transition, which makes in situ remediation  of Paddy straw as a promising solution.  He demonstrated application of customized microbial consortium, which has been successfully practiced in Gujarat and Maharashtra. This was 
welcomed very enthusiastically by the farming community. 

A senior scientist, Dr. P Shanmugam, from CSIR-CLRI, Chennai, shared the successful setup of various Biogas plants through-out the world, with a specific community level low-economy model for countries like Peru. He has also set up a one of its kind horizontal digester in UK. The event also witnessed high-powered deliberations on Bio-refineries by Dr. R K Jain from UNIDO, Delhi and Waste valorization strategies by Dr. Sudesh Kumar from CIAB, Mohali; and Bio-Fuels.

The farming community, represented by Jang Bahadur Singh Sangha, Mr. Vikram Ahuja and Mr. Rashid Hassan, also laid out their challenges for the Industry and Academia to work upon and offered their fields and other facilities for trials of innovative technologies.  

The industry, represented by Mr. Anil Kumar, Executive Director, Shreyans 
Industries Ltd., also pitched in very enthusiastically during the panel discussion, sparking the idea of using Corporate Social Responsibility to its full potential to resolve the problem of Agri-waste management. Adding further to it, Mr. Rohit Khaitan from Kuantum Papers Ltd., suggested that revamping of state policies relating bio-fuel production, will aid in reducing the dependency of the country on import of crude oil.  

Dr. Anita Aggarwal, Scientist E, DST, GoI, introduced the theme of the 
workshop and stressed upon the need to bring all the stakeholders together for an inclusive and sustainable solution. Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, further urged the forum to brainstorm ideas in order to formulate viable recommendations to the government and briefed about the initiatives of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology in the theme area. 

Prof. S S Marwaha, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), shared some of the initiatives of the PPCB such as door to door awareness programmes relating to harmful effects of stubble burning. He also urged the farming community to join hands with the regional institutes and the industry to execute the 3Rs(Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) strategy in this region. 

The event culminated with a panel discussion, led by Mr. K S Pannu, Secretary, Agriculture and Soil Conservation, Punjab and steered by Prof. Rupinder Tewari, Coordinator, DST-CPR at Panjab University. It was equally represented by both Industry 
and Academia and scrutinized the dynamics of managing agri-waste in the most sustainable manner. Mr. Pannu quoted the Gurbani, saying that ‘whatever comes from the soil, must go back to it’.

The event witnessed informal interactions between the government bodies, scientific community (scientists and research scholars), farming communities and Industries and served to set a strong foundation for an action oriented resolution.

Annual Function organized at PU Girls Hostel No. 3

The Sarojini hall (GH3), Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated Annual Day function where Ms. Harvinder Khetal, Assistant Editor of English Daily, Prof Parminder Singh Ahluwalia, Director Sports, and Ms. Renuka  Salwan, Director, Public Relations, Panjab University Chandigarh were Guests of Honour who gave away prizes to the committee members, winners of sports day and of various events like Wall magazine, Rangoli, mehandi, poster making and essay writing competitions organized in the hostel 
throughout the year. 

Prof. Emanual Nahar (DSW) and Prof. Neena Capalash DSW (W) also graced the occasion by their presence. The residents had prepared a video showing the year’s activities, which was also a tribute to the outgoing residents depicting memories which they had cherished in the hostel during their stay.  

The function ended with the motivational speech by the chief guest who happens to be a winner of Prem Bhatia Fellowship for young journalist, a prestigious  national  level award and an alumni of the English and mass communication department of Panjab University. In the end Dr. Ravneet Kaur, warden congratulated and wished all the best to the outgoing residents for their new endeavours.

Annual Function organized at PU Girls Hostel No 6 

        Mother Teresa Hall (Girls hostel no-6), Panjab University, Chandigarh 
organised its Annual Function. The residents of the hostel organised a party to bid a farewell to the outgoing mates. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice chancellor, P.U., Chandigarh. 
     

Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Prof. Neena Capalash, Dean Student Welfare (Women) and faculty members from various departments of the University also graced the occasion with their presence. Prof. Neena Caplash gave her blessings and wishes for bright future of the outgoing residents.

The hostel was decorated with lights, flowers, rangoli etc. Residents
showcased their talent by dancing, singing and by playing music. Around twenty contestants participated in Miss Farewell contest. The crown for Miss Farewell was bagged by Ms. Ashureet Kaur. A special dinner was also served to the residents on this occasion. The residents enjoyed a lot on the D.J. floor by dancing.

Special Lecture on “Indian Ocean and India’s Maritime History” by Dr. Vijay Sakhuja at the DDNSS.
     

A Special Lecture on the theme “Indian Ocean and India’s Maritime History” by Dr. Vijay Sakhuja, Senior Visiting Fellow, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore and Former Director of the National Maritime Foundation, former Research Director, Indian Council for World Affairs and a retired Indian Navy Officer, at the Department Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, here today. 
       

Dr. Sakhuja dwelled upon the maritime history of the Indian Ocean, starting from the 7th century to the near present. He explained how the comparison of the ancient Arab, Indian and Chinese sea routes of the 7th century with the Sea Lines of Communication (S.L.O.C.’s) of the present times, a continuity is visible. Speaking about the naval expeditions of the Chola Dynasty in the 10th Century, he explained how this was the only Indian Kingdom which went to the South East Asia. He also spoke 
about the voyages of Zhang during the Ming Dynasty era, which were aimed at enhancing 
trade, diplomacy and establishment of suzerainty, were recalled when the Chinese deployed their naval ships for counter piracy operations the first time.
       

He also discussed the evolution of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative 
(B.R.I.) Plan and the implications of the introduction of 5G communications in Tibet.
       

He also explained India’s approach towards the Geo-Politics of the Indian 
Ocean based on Prime Minister Modi’s “Security and Growth for All in the Region (S.A.G.A.R.)” Initiative which was first discussed during the Indian Premier’s visit to Mauritius in 2016. Stating various examples, Dr Sakhuja explained how every water body, big or small, if used appropriately can become a mode for generation of revenue. He also touched upon the aspect of River based Economy.
       

Highlighting the uncertainties prevalent in the Indian Ocean Strategic 
environment, he explained how the Balance of Power in the Asia Pacific is under pressure; Shifting dramatically and redistributed.
     

Talking about the issue of piracy problems near Somalia, and the world
response in the form of a joint task force comprising ships from various international navies operating together have been able to reduce the incidents of piracy and thus has been a successful collective security effort.
       

He discussed the various areas in which cooperation has been achieved by the Indian Ocean Rim Association such as training, joint exercises, joint or coordinated patrols, port calls, high-level visits, military sales and services, capacity building, counter weapons of mass destruction, counter terrorism, counter piracy, fisheries protection etc. 
       

Dr. Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson introduced the theme as well as the speaker to the audience. He also highlighted the fact that the theme of the seminar is a formal part of the curriculum of the master’s programme in the department.

The lecture was attended by members of various faculty members, serving and retired armed forces officers pursuing various courses in the department, research scholars and students. The lecture was followed by a questions and answers session with the audience.

Workshop on ‘Bio-waste to Bio-resources’ under Swachhata Action Plan
at Panjab University, Chandigarh

The 5 th workshop of Swachhata Action Plan (SAP), on the theme,
‘Management of Biomass (Agri waste and Municipal waste) into
Bioresources’, under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology
(DST), Government of India, is being organized by DST-Centre for
Policy Research, in association with Chandigarh Region Innovation and
Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), on Tuesday, April 23 rd , 2019, at Panjab
University, Chandigarh. The event has been orchestrated to mobilize
the national Administrative-Academic-Industrial ecosystem to address
and resolve the issue of agricultural and municipal waste, with
particular focus on the issue of ‘Paddy Straw (i.e. Stubble) Burning’.
The event will see representations from the Government (state and
central), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO),
Scientific community (Universities and National Research Labs),
Industries (Agro-based and Food industry), Farming community (Farmers
Associations and Corporate Farmers) and Punjab Pollution Control
Board.

The event will be marked by deliberations on identifying strategies
for the efficient utilization of Paddy Straw as Bio-fuels and raw
materials in various industries, with a dedicated interactive session
on ‘Sustainable Management of Agro-waste’. The ‘Key-Note Address’ will
be delivered by the Padmashree awardee, Dr. M H Mehta, Chairman,
Gujarat Life Sciences, Ahmedabad. The event will be inaugurated by the
Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Prof. Raj Kumar, graced by Mr.
Suresh Kumar (Chief Principal Secretary, Punjab) as the Chief Guest
and Prof. S S Marwaha, (Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board) as
the Guest of Honour.

 Dr. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University Chandigarh organised
one day national seminar on the theme ‘Women Empowerment in Bharat
Through Ages’ here today.

Smt. Anarben Patel, Director , Gramshree -Women Empowerment,
Ahmedabad, Gujarat  provided inputs from her own life and ground
experiences and shared her experience how she moved into the
downtrodden sections and address to their needs and grievance. She
gave example of her mother who stood by her ideals and stopped a child
marriage even when it meant bycott from their own community. She
encouraged women to find the answer to the question, ‘Who Am I?’ The
answers needs to be found both in spiritual and physical world. She
reiterated her commitment to all women to help them find their
potential and identify themselves as themselves minus any family,
caste, community and other social identities.

She beseeched men to work in the ground and mentally accept the equal
status of women and not act as hindrance to women empowerment. She
acts the stereotypical segregation of men and women in various social
groups and denial of political participations at the ground level. She
concluded the talk with a message that women must move in society and
work hard to achieve their potential without getting entangled in
social barriers. She hoped the society must move towards finding the
answer to the question ‘what is right?’ from ‘who is right?’ to
achieve real harmony in the society.

Prof Raj Kumar, PU Vice Chancellor welcomed the dignitaries and
stressed that the real women empowerment can be achieved only through
deeply ingraining the idea of equality in mind. The same can be done
by bringing up our daughters with all intellectual and physical
capabilities ranging from education to equality at home. He stressed
that no nation or society can achieve real progress without bringing
half of its population at equal footing. He remarked that Dr Ambedkar
also wanted special attention to be given to the women of India and he
worked hard to achieve the same in his life through various legal
reforms. prof Raj Kumar also thanked His Excellency Sh. Satyadeo
Narain Ji, Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, for his able guidance to the
University.

Ms Heena Kumari, IRS  delivered her talk on defining the meaning of
Empowerment of Women and how women had significant role to play
throughout history giving various examples from Indian past. While
highlighting some features of matriachial society, she hoped that the
same can be adopted to some extent in Indian culture giving hope to
indian women who have otherwise displayed their worth in competitive
world.

Mr. Rajesh Bagga, Former Chairman SC Commission Punjab, highlighted
the vision of Dr. Ambedkar specially for women and shared his
experience in the ground and discussed how he had to convince the
husbands to first treat their wives at home equally before expecting
equality in social life. He gave the message that followers of Dr.
Ambedkar have the responsibility to replicate the ideals of Babasahib
who dreamt of strong country minus any distinction on the basis of
caste,creed and religion. He reiterated that breakers of law can not
be real Ambedkarites as Babsahib respected the education, law and
discipline.

Ms Alka Gauri, State Organiser, Panjab and Haryana Vivekananda Kendra
reminded audience if indian philosophy believed in soul which
undergoes through many circles of birth, then soul is genderless and
men and women are equal creation of nature with same consciouness.
Thus men and women  must respect each other both as equal and
compatible and the same has been enumerated by all sages of Indian
civilization.

Earlier, Prof Devinder Thakur , coordinator of the centre, introduced
the theme and thanked Vice Chancellor for providing all support to the
centre and assured that the centre will soon start a course and
fellowships to the needy students to disseminate  the ideals of Dr
Ambedkar.

Dr. Aditi Sharma conducted the session and Dr. Anil Thakur offered
the vote of thanks.

The session was attended by PU Fellows, Deans, Chairpersons, Faculty,
researchers  and students from many states across north India.

पवनपुत्र श्री हनुमान जयंती 19 अप्रैल 2019

हिन्‍दू कैलेंडर के अनुसार चैत्र शुक्‍ल पूर्णिमा को श्री हनुमान जयंती मनाई जाती है। इस बार 19 अप्रैल को हुनमान जयंती है।

आपको बता दें कि भक्‍त अपनी-अपनी मान्‍यताओं के अनुसार साल में अलग-अलग दिन हनुमान जयंती मनाते हैं।हालांकि उत्तर भारत में चैत्र शुक्‍ल पूर्णिमा के दिन मनाई जाने वाली हनुमान जयंती अधिक लोकप्रिय है।

पवनपुत्र हनुमान को भगवान शिव का 11वां अवतार माना जाता है। इस बार हनुमान जन्मोत्सव 19 अप्रैल यानी आज मनाया जा रहा है।

भक्‍तों के लिए हनुमान जयंती का खास महत्‍व है। संकटमोचन हनुमान को प्रसन्‍न करने के लिए भक्‍त पूरे दिन व्रत रखते हैं और हनुमान चालीसा का पाठ करते हैं।

मान्‍यता है कि इस दिन पांच या 11 बार हनुमान चालीसा का पाठ करने से पवन पुत्र हनुमान प्रसन्‍न होकर भक्‍तों पर कृपा बरसाते हैं। इस मौके पर मंदिरों में विशेष पूजा-पाठ का आयोजन होता है।

घरों और मंदिरों में भजन-कीर्तन होते हैं। हनुमान जी को प्रसन्‍न करने के लिए सिंदूर चढ़ाया जाता है और सुंदर कांड का पाठ करने का भी प्रावधान है। शाम की आरती के बाद भक्‍तों में प्रसाद वितरित करते हुए सभी के लिए मंगल कामना की जाती है।श्री हनुमान जयंती में कई जगहों पर मेला भी लगता है।

मंदिर में बजरंगबली के दर्शन के लिए सुबह से ही भक्तों की लाइन लगी रही।

इस बात का रखें कि हनुमान के सामने घी का या फिर चमेली के तेल का ही दीपक जलाएं।

स्नान करने के बाद ही प्रसाद तैयार करें। पूजा में हनुमान जी को लाल रंग का ही फूल चढ़ाएं।

जयंती पर हनुमान जी को चोला चढ़ाएं।

Panjab University Dental Institute to offer state-of-art CBCT facility

 The Dental Institute of Panjab University will soon start State of the art 
CBCT(Cone Beam Computerized Tomography) facility to provide high end diagnostic scanning facility.  The University Dental Institute is the first Dental Institute in the region to offer such a kind of facility after PGI.   The CBCT Scan facility is a three-dimensional X-ray scanning facility which will help in the treatment planning of patients in need of implants, orthoganthic surgeries, aligner orthodontic treatment, root canal treatment and other complicated treatment. Further the presence of CBCT facility will give a greater push to the dental institute as far as is research objectives are concerned. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Professor 
Rajkumar today personally visited this facility and expressed satisfaction of its potential benefits to general public.  The CBCT Scan will be offered to general public at a nominal cost making this useful investigation affordable for general public.

Panjab University, Chandigarh organised a one-day workshop on [UTF-8?]“Conflict Resolution and Peace [UTF-8?]Building” to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi ji

 The Department of Gandhian & Peace Studies, Panjab
University, Chandigarh organised a one-day workshop on [UTF-8?]“Conflict
Resolution and Peace [UTF-8?]Building” to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi ji. Dr. Ashu Pasricha, Chairperson of the Department introduced key speakers to the audience and also informed them about the event.

Dr Sumit Narula, Director, Amity School of Communication, Amity
University Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior was the Chief Facilitator of the
workshop. During the workshop he gave hands-on training on the topic
Conflict Resolution and Peace Building.  He started his talk by saying
that [UTF-8?]“We are surrounded by conflicts at our homes, workplace, society, within nations as well as internationally. How can we transform
conflict societies into peace-loving societies? As part of the civil
society, there is a need to formulate creative ways of dealing with
conflicts. This workshop aims at educating people on the paradigms,
models and skills that can aid societies in transforming conflicts in
a peaceful manner and by spotting the possibilities of moving away
from conflict and building peace. Peace Building is thus an
always-ongoing and dynamic [UTF-8?]process.” Conflicts can be resolved
successfully if we view it from the perspective of a WIN-WIN
situation.

The Workshop focused on the following:

1) To gain an understanding of the basic nature and challenges of
contemporary conflicts.

2) Familiarize students with theoretical understandings of the related
fields of Conflict Transformation, Conflict Prevention, Conflict
Management, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding.

3) Develop capacities and skills for responding to social conflicts
(such as dialogue, active listening, facilitation, meditation and
negotiation).

4) Facilitate an in-depth knowledge about peacebuilding approaches in
diverse conflict reasons.

5) Create an interactive space for the building of a network of young
people committed to constructive social change.

6) Build a synergy between the theory and practice of Conflict
Transformation, Human security and Development.

 The faculty members, research scholars, students and members
of the staff of the department similarly, faculty members, staff and
students from other departments of the University attended this
Lecture. The Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies &
Honorary Director, Gandhi Bhawan, Dr. Ashu Pasricha, extended her warm
thanks to all the invited guests and the attendees. She emphasised
that the values, thoughts and principles espoused by Gandhiji can
guide our planet towards a better future.
