Every year Panjab University, Chandigarh awards two Medals to the toppers of the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. During the last convocation held in the month of April 28, 2019 Ms. Nandani was awarded with a Professor (Dr.) S.R.K. Chopra Memorial Gold Medal for standing First in (B.Sc. Hons.) Anthropology for the year 2018 and Ms. Harpreet Kaur Saini was felicitated with Dewan Bahadur Wali Ram Taneja Gold Medal for standing First in (M.Sc. Hons.) Anthropology for the year 2018.
The students brought laurels to the Department of Anthropology and the Chairperson Dr. Kewal Krishan wishes the students all the best for their future endeavours and further studies.

The inaugural of the seven days National workshop on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences with focus on the theme Equity and Social Justice from May 20 -29, 2019, organised by Centre for Academic Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh under PMMMNMTT scheme of MHRD began today at ICSSR, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Prof. Padma S. Sarangapani from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, in her keynote address, dwelled upon the three ideas relevant to the way of doing qualitative research i.e. engaging patiently with subjects, getting them to talk and evoking the idea of self as research instrument. She also emphasised the relationship between researcher and researched and its importance in qualitative research.
Prof. Krishna Kumar, Former Director NCERT, New Delhi chaired the inaugural session where he made all the participants ponder about the word quality in qualitative research where quality reminds us about the nature of life and continual of the relationship of researcher and researched is very essence of qualitative research.
Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, Panjab University highlighted the prejudices prevailing in the society and dire need to deliberate upon these issues.
Dr. Jatinder Grover, CALEM coordinator from Department of Education, Panjab University extended welcome to all the dignitaries and expressed that the workshop provides an opportunity to deliberate at length on various issues related to qualitative research.
The background paper on the theme of the workshop was presented by Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur, Program Coordinator, emphasising the need to go beyond the dynamics of the numbers and unravel the hidden realities through the tradition of the qualitative research.
Prof. Latika Sharma, Chairperson of the Department extended vote of thanks to all luminaries present during the inaugural.
A session on Two Ideas on Social Science by Prof. Emeritus Bhupinder Singh, Department of Political Science, followed the inaugural. He emphasised that the method of research, quantitative or qualitative, comes from two different conceptions of social sciences where methodically collected evidences are crucial and he also explained the epistemological issues of generating and disseminating knowledge. The session concluded with the questions by participants which were explicated by the resource person.

The Linnaean Society of London has awarded Dr. Ranjana Jaiswara, DST-INSPIRE Faculty, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh a prestigious research grant of £ 1000 (British pound) for the year 2019. The current research grant from the Linnaean Society of London is to explore and document diversity of Indian cricket species based exclusively on their acoustic signals. Crickets sound producing structure is now being extensively studied by bioengineers and nanotechnologists to design highly efficient and smaller speakers for portable devices like mobile phones and hearing aids for humans. The Linnaean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society founded in 1788 and named in the honor of the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, “Father of Modern Taxonomy”. It is an international society of many prominent scientists dedicated to the study of, and the dissemination of information concerning, natural history, evolution, and taxonomy of biological specimens.
Dr. Ranjana recently joined PU with India’s most distinguished faculty award by the Department of Science and Technology. She pursued her PhD degree from the top most institute, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in collaboration with Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France. Over a decade, Dr. Ranjana’s research work has been focused on demonstrating the use of acoustic signals as an efficient tool in addressing the serious problem of species identification in biology. Scientific publications in the international journals of Zoological Journal of Linnaean Society, London and PLoS ONE are a few to evidence.

वाशिंगटन: राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रम्प ने मिडल ईस्ट में युद्धोन्माद के संदर्भ में चेतावनी दी है।
उन्होंने कहा है कि अमेरिका और ईरान के बीच लड़ाई होती है तो ईरान पूरी तरह ख़त्म हो जाएगा।
ट्रम्प ने रविवार को ट्विटर हैंडल पर कहा है, ”यदि ईरान युद्ध चाहता है तो उसका अंत निश्चित है।
वह अमेरिका को कदापि चेतावनी न दे।” अमेरिका ने हाल में दो युद्ध पोत फ़ारस की खाड़ी में तैनात किए हैं। ट्रम्प का रविवार का ट्वीट उनके पिछले बयानों से हटकर है।
जबकि उन्होंने पिछले सप्ताह पेंटागन अधिकारियों से युद्ध की आशंकाओं से इनकार किया था।
उन्होंने पत्रकारों के पूछे जाने पर भी युद्ध की संभावनाओं से इनकार किया था। यही बात ईरान के विदेश मंत्री जावेद जरीफ ने भी कही थी कि उनकी युद्ध में कोई मंशा नहीं है।

लॉस एंजेल्स: गुगुल ने चीनी टेक मोबाइल कंपनी ‘हुआवे’ के एंड्राएड आपरेटिंग सिस्टम के कुछेक अपडेट का उपयोग बंद कर दिया है, जो चीनी कंपनी के लिए एक बड़ा आघात बताया जा रहा है।
हुआवे के नए डिज़ाइन वाले मोबाइल स्मार्ट फ़ोन में अब गुगुल की कुछ एप्स हटा ली गई हैं।
उल्लेखनीय है कि राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रम्प ने हाल में इस चीनी टेक कंपनी के विरुद्ध प्रतिबंध लगाकर अमेरिकी कंपनियों को इससे किनारा करने के आदेश दिए थे।
गूगल ने एक बयान जारी कर इस आशय की जानकारी दी है।
हुआवे कंपनी ने इस पर टिप्पणी करने से इनकार किया है। इसका अभिप्राय यह होगा कि चीनी कंपनी हुआवे के भविष्य में आने वाले सेल फ़ोन में यू ट्यूब और मैप्स एप्स नहीं होंगे।

यह जानकारी देते हुए नगराधीश गगनदीप सिंह ने बताया कि इस कार्यक्रम में जिला के सभी विभागों के अधिकारी व कर्मचारी उपायुक्त डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह की अध्यक्षता में देश से आतंकवाद की समस्या को समाप्त करने में सहयोग देने की शपथ लेंगे। उन्होंने कहा कि सभी अधिकारियों को स्टाफ सहित इस कार्यक्रम में शामिल होने के निर्देश दिये गये है।

उपायुक्त एवं जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ने आज कालका व पंचकूला विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के लिये स्थापित मतगणना केंद्रों व ईवीएम स्ट्रोगरूम का निरीक्षण किया। उन्होंने मतगणना के लिये किये गये प्रबंधों की समीक्षा भी की। उनके साथ एसडीएम पंकज सेतिया भी उपस्थित रहे।
उपायुक्त ने बताया कि चुनाव आयोग के निर्देशानुसार 23 मई को लोकसभा चुनाव की मतगणना की प्रशासन द्वारा वीडियोग्राफी करवई जायेगी। उन्होंने बताया कि चुनाव आयोग द्वारा मतगणना पूरी तरह से पारदर्शी एवं निष्पक्ष करवाने के लिये व्यापक प्रबंध किये गये है तथा जिले के दोनों मतगणना केंद्रों पर मतगणना के दौरान चुनाव आयोग की ओर से नियुक्त पर्यवेक्षक मौजूद रहेंगे।
उन्होंने बताया कि पर्यवेक्षक को छोड़कर किसी भी अधिकारी, कर्मचारी, पोलिंग एजैंट या अन्य किसी व्यक्ति को मतदान केंद्रों के अंदर मोबाईल फोन या अन्य कोई ऐसा उपकरण साथ ले जाने की अनुमति नहीं होगी। उन्होंने कहा कि इसी प्रकार मीडिया को भी मतगणना की वीडियोग्राफी करने की अनुमति नहीं होगी लेकिन वह दूर से उसकी फोटो खींच सकते है। मीडियाकर्मियों की सुविधा के लिये प्रत्येक मतदान केंद्र के मीडिया सेंटर बनाये गये है जहां उन्हें इंटरनेट की सुविधा उपलब्ध रहेगी।
उन्होंने बताया कि मतगणना करने वाली टीमों की रैंडमनाईजेशन की जायेगी, जिससे यह निर्धारित किया जायेगा कि कौन सा कर्मचारी किस टेबल पर बैठकर मतगणना करेगा। उन्होंने बताया कि मतगणना एजेंट बनाने का कार्य सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारियों द्वारा किया जा रहा है तथा इसके लिये केवल चुनाव लड़ने वाले प्रत्याशियों को ही मतगणना एजेंटो के नाम भेजने के लिये अधिकृत किया गया है। मतगणना एजेंट अपने साथ मोबाईल फोन, घड़ी, अंगुठी तथा पैन, पैंसिल व कागज नहीं ले जा सकते है। एक बार मतगणना केंद्र में जाने के बाद किसी भी कर्मचारी या एजेंट को मतगणना पूरी होने तक विशेष परिस्थिति को छोड़कर बाहर आने की अनुमति नहीं होगी। उपायुक्त ने बताया कि मतगणना केंद्रों में कोई भी सुरक्षा कर्मी प्रवेश नहीं कर सकेगा।
डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ने बताया कि सहायक निर्वाचन अधिकारी द्वारा प्रत्येक राउंड के बाद यह घोषणा की जायेगी कि किस प्रत्याशी को कितने मत प्राप्त हुये है। लोगों की सुविधा के लिये ऐसी घोषणा मतगणना केंद्र के बाहर भी की जायेगी। उन्होंने कहा कि मतगणना के लिये सभी विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में 14-14 टेबल लगाये गये है तथा मतगणना का कार्य प्रातः 8 बजे शुरू होगा। मतगणना केंद्रों पर माईक्रो आब्जर्वर की भी नियुक्ति की गई है तथा प्रत्येक राउंड के बाद एआरओ के माध्यम से ई-मेल द्वारा उनके पास भी रिपोर्ट भेजी जायेगी। मतगणना केंद्रों के बाहर सुरक्षा के व्यापक प्रबंध किये गये है।

लोकसभा चुनाव के सातवें व आखिरी चरण का मतदान संपन्न होने के ठीक एक दिन बाद सोमवार को तेल विपणन कंपनियों ने पेट्रोल और डीजल के दाम बढ़ा दिए।
पेट्रोल दिल्ली और मुंबई में नौ पैसे जबकि कोलकाता में आठ पैसे और चेन्नई में 10 पैसे प्रति लीटर महंगा हो गया है। डीजल के दाम दिल्ली और कोलकाता में 15 पैसे जबकि मुंबई और चेन्नई में 16 पैसे प्रति लीटर बढ़ गए हैं।
पेट्रोल और डीजल के दाम में रविवार को कोई बदलाव नहीं किया गया था। कमोडिटी बाजार के जानकार बताते हैं कि अंतरार्ष्ट्रीय बाजार में कच्चे तेल में आई हालिया तेजी के बाद अब पेट्रोल और डीजल के दाम में फिलहाल राहत मिलने की गुंजाइश नहीं है।
इंडियन ऑयल की वेबसाइट के अनुसार, सोमवार को दिल्ली, कोलकता, मुंबई और चेन्नई में पेट्रोल के दाम बढ़कर क्रमश: 71.12 रुपये, 73.19 रुपये, 76.73 रुपये और 73.82 रुपये प्रति लीटर हो गए। डीजल के दाम भी चारों महानगरों में बढ़कर क्रमश: 66.11 रुपये, 67.86 रुपये, 69.27 रुपये और 69.88 रुपये प्रति लीटर हो गए हैं।

इराक की राजधानी बगदाद एक रॉकेट गिरने की खबर है जो अमेरिकी दूतावास के पास गिरा है।
यह रॉकेट बीती रात गिराया गया। इराक सरकार ने इसकी जानकारी दी है।।
इराकी सेना ने कहा कि इराक की राजधानी बगदाद में एक रॉकेट को भारी-भरकम ग्रीन जोन से दागा गया, जिसमें सरकारी इमारतें और विदेशी दूतावास हैं, लेकिन कोई हताहत नहीं हुआ।
बीती रात केंद्रीय बगदाद में एक धमाके की आवाज सुनाई दी, रॉयटर्स के गवाहों ने कहा और दो बगदाद स्थित राजनयिक सूत्रों ने भी कहा कि उन्होंने विस्फोट की आवाज को सुना था।

Sh Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India will deliver the lecture on mplementation of Large Scale Social Transformation Programmes: Lessons from the Swachh Bharat Mission. He is leading the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission and the National Rural Drinking Water Programme of Govt. of India. A 1981 batch IAS officer joined the World Bank in 2009. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Iyer was serving as Manager for Water in the World Bank based in Washington DC and he has been working on water supply and sanitation issues since June 2012. He has over 20 years of experience in the water supply and sanitation sector.
Sh. Iyar will deliberate on Swachh Bharat Mission. The Swachh Bharat Mission has revolutionized sanitation in India; India has brought over 50 crore people out of open defecation and halved the global open defecation burden, in just five years. The story of India going from a sanitation coverage of 39% to 99% in five years is unparalleled. India has harnessed the power of its people to bring about a fundamental shift in their collective conscience and change a centuries-old habit, in half a decade. The talk will highlight key points of how Swachh Bharat Mission transcended from a government programme to mass movement, a Jan Andolan.
The Swachh Bharat journey has laid down a blueprint for future government supported and people led transformations.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU will be the chief guest, whereas, Prof. T.R. Sharma, Executive Director, NABI, Mohali is guest of honour. Prof. Girish Sahani, Former Secretary, DSIR and DG-CSIR will be presiding over the function.
