*Municipal Corporation reviews adoption of Haryana Fire Safety Act for Chandigarh; Committee keen on strengthening city safety measures*
A meeting of the Fire and Rescue Services Committee was held here today under the chairmanship of MC Councillor Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, along with members Smt. Gurbax Rawat, Sh. Anup Gupta, Sh. Jasmanpreet Singh, Smt. Mohinder Kaur, and Sh. Kuldeep Kumar. The meeting was also attended by senior officials, station fire officers, and departmental representatives of the Fire Rescue Department.
The agenda of the meeting was to review the proposal for adopting provisions of the Haryana Fire Safety Act for Chandigarh. More than 105 suggestions were received from the general public, which were formally placed before the Committee for consideration.
During detailed deliberations, the Committee expressed strong concern for the safety and security of the citizens and showed keen interest in taking robust and prompt decisions on citywide fire safety measures.
Key points discussed included:
Review of rainwater drainage and water-logging management undertaken by the Fire Department at multiple vulnerable locations.
Ensuring enhanced preparedness of fire safety services and strengthening the readiness of manpower and equipment across the city.
Decision to procure and modernize fire safety equipment through the Disaster Management Funds to ensure rapid emergency response.
A presentation by departmental officers on existing infrastructure, preparedness, and additional requirements for effective citywide coverage.
The Committee also charted out a provisional plan of safety measures, which includes:
Upgradation of fire hydrant systems and their regular maintenance.
Introducing awareness drives in residential, commercial, and institutional areas on preventive fire safety practices.
Strengthening coordination between the Fire Department, Disaster Management Cell, and other civic bodies for quicker response during emergencies.
Mapping of high-risk areas and preparing a detailed strategy for localized fire safety action plans.
The Committee emphasized that it is highly curious and committed to ensuring city safety, and all decisions will be taken keeping the welfare and security of residents as the foremost priority. The next meeting will finalize a comprehensive action plan after reviewing all objections, suggestions, and departmental inputs.
