The Fire Services Day has been observed throughout the country since 1944, the year when more than 500 persons including 66 Fire Brigade personnel lost their lives in a major fire in Mumbai. Fire brigade officials said that in 1944, a huge consignment of arms and ammunition kept at the Mumbai dockyard caught fire. The arms and ammunition was meant to be used against Japan by the British, who then ruled over India. Over 500 persons lost their lives in the fire. 66 Fire brigade personnel, who valiantly fought the fire, also lost their lives. Since then, April 14 has been observed as Fire Services Day.
